How much does a motorcycle weigh is a question with a strange property: every page that answers it gives a range, none of them says which quantity the range measures, and the manufacturers themselves publish four different words for it. On the search results I pulled for this article, the top ten included a luggage company, a car-cover shop, a law firm, a silicone tool mat brand and three Facebook threads. Not one quoted a definition.
So I went and read the definitions. The European type-approval regulation, the delegated regulation that lays down how the masses of a two-wheeler are declared, the American federal definitions section, the American labelling rule, and then the spec pages of Harley-Davidson, Ducati and KTM, side by side, in the same afternoon.
Seven quantities have a legal definition. Not one of them is called dry weight.
The short version, before the documents
- European law defines one weight for a motorcycle and calls it mass in running order: the unladen machine with all its liquids, its standard equipment, its tools, and the fuel tank filled to at least 90 per cent. The rider is explicitly not in it.
- American federal law defines three: curb weight, unloaded vehicle weight and gross vehicle weight rating. The first two are both the empty bike, measured slightly differently. The third is a number the manufacturer chooses.
- Add the three further masses that European law names in the same breath as the first — actual mass, technically permissible maximum laden mass and pay-mass — and there are seven defined quantities. The word dry appears in none of them. I counted, on the full texts.
- Harley-Davidson prints “Weight, In Running Order”. Ducati prints “Wet weight no fuel”, which contradicts itself in three words. KTM prints both “Weight (without fuel)” and “Weight fully fueled” in the same table, six kilos apart.
- The same figure, 165 kg, appears on KTM’s own site labelled “Weight (without fuel)” for a 2024 390 Duke and “Weight fully fueled” for the 2026 one. Same number, opposite meanings, same manufacturer.
- Seat height is the one body-related measurement that European vehicle law uses at all: it separates enduro from trial motorcycles at 900 mm and 700 mm. And nothing in the masses-and-dimensions annex says how to measure it.
- Harley’s published seat height is not the seat height of an empty motorcycle. The footnote reads: “Measurement reflects 180 lb. (81.7 kg) operator weight.” If you weigh less than that stranger, your bike is taller than the brochure.
- Ducati publishes four seat heights for one Monster, from 820 mm down to 775 mm, because the factory sells the difference as accessories.
- The official rider manual, the one American states hand out, never uses the phrase seat height at all. It uses a sentence instead, and the sentence is better.
Where the number in the brochure comes from
If a motorcycle is sold in Europe, it has been type-approved under Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, the regulation that decides what every powered two-wheeler legally is. That regulation contains an article whose entire job is to say how heavy a motorcycle is. It is Article 5, and it is titled Mass in running order determination.
The mass in running order of an L-category vehicle shall be determined by measuring the mass of the unladen vehicle ready for normal use and shall include the mass of: (a) liquids; (b) standard equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications; (c) ‘fuel’ in the fuel tanks that shall be filled to at least 90 % of their capacities.
The list continues: the bodywork, the cabin, the doors, the glazing, the coupling, the spare wheels as well as the tools. On a motorcycle most of those items do not exist, but the tools do, and so does every drop of oil, coolant and brake fluid.
Then the article says what to leave out, and this is the part worth reading twice.
The mass in running order of an L-category vehicle shall exclude the mass of: (a) the driver (75 kg) and passenger (65 kg); (b) the machines or equipment installed on the load platform area; (c) in the case of a hybrid or pure electric vehicle, the propulsion batteries.
Three things follow from those two paragraphs, and each of them explains a confusion that fills forums.
First, European law does have an official weight for a motorcycle, and the explanatory notes to the annexes say so in one flat line: “The weight of a vehicle is considered equal to its mass in running order.” When a European brochure gives one weight figure without qualification, that is almost always the one, because it is the figure the type-approval file had to contain.
Second, the rider is a fixed 75 kg who is not you. European law does not weigh riders; it assigns them a mass. The passenger is assigned 65 kg. Those two numbers are not measurements of anybody. They are constants, and they turn up again the moment you go looking for the loaded figures.
Third, and this is the one that surprised me: on an electric or hybrid vehicle, the propulsion battery is not part of the mass in running order. The single heaviest component of an electric motorcycle sits outside its legal weight.
The 90 per cent that is not a number
Read Article 5(1)(c) again slowly: the tanks “shall be filled to at least 90 % of their capacities”.
At least. It is a floor, not a value. A laboratory that fills the tank to 90 per cent and a laboratory that fills it to the brim have both complied, and they will hand the approval authority two different figures for the same machine. On a 14-litre tank that is a litre and a half of difference, entirely legally. Published weights hide other things too — the actuators that turn a manual gearbox into an automatic weigh about 2.8 kg on Yamaha’s own figures, which I went through in automatic motorcycles.
The same regulation is even more relaxed one level up. In the definition of what counts as the same variant of the same vehicle type, criterion (f) reads:
the difference in mass in running order between the lowest value and the highest value does not exceed 20 % of the lowest value
Twenty per cent. Two machines can be versions of the same variant of the same type while one of them weighs a fifth more than the other. That is not a loophole anybody is exploiting; it is a reminder of what a type-approval figure is for. It exists to put the vehicle in the right box for licences, emissions and taxes. It was never designed to be a shopping comparison.
The battery the law leaves out, proved by the law itself
I did not want to lean on Article 5(2)(c) as a curiosity, so I looked for the place where the exclusion would break something. European law classifies enduro and trial motorcycles as sub-sub-categories with hard limits, and the enduro criteria read like this:
L3e-AxE (x = 1, 2 or 3) Enduro motorcycles (a) seat height ≥ 900 mm and (b) ground clearance ≥ 310 mm and (c) overall gear ratio in highest gear … ≥ 6,0 and (d) mass in running order plus the mass of the propulsion battery in case of electric or hybrid electric propulsion ≤ 140 kg
There it is. The legislator had to write “mass in running order plus the mass of the propulsion battery” because mass in running order, on its own, would not have included it. An electric trail bike could otherwise have slipped under a 140 kg ceiling while weighing 190 kg on the ground. The clumsiest phrase in the annex is the proof that the exclusion is real.
The trial criteria are built the same way, with the mirror-image number: seat height ≤ 700 mm, fuel tank capacity ≤ 4 litres, mass in running order ≤ 100 kg.
Two motorcycle categories in European law, and both of them are defined partly by how tall the seat is. Hold that thought.
What American law calls it instead, and why the same bike weighs more there
Cross the Atlantic and the vocabulary changes completely. The definitions section of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, 49 CFR 571.3, is where American vehicle words are pinned down, and it pins down two separate ways of weighing an empty vehicle.
Curb weight means the weight of a motor vehicle with standard equipment; maximum capacity of engine fuel, oil, and coolant; and, if so equipped, air conditioning and additional weight optional engine.
Unloaded vehicle weight means the weight of a vehicle with maximum capacity of all fluids necessary for operation of the vehicle, but without cargo, occupants, or accessories that are ordinarily removed from the vehicle when they are not in use.
Both say maximum capacity. Not 90 per cent — full. So the same motorcycle, measured to the American definition, is heavier on paper than the same motorcycle measured to the European one, by up to a tenth of a tankful. That is not a manufacturer being slippery. That is two legal systems disagreeing about how full a fuel tank is when nobody has ridden the bike yet.
The two American definitions also differ from each other, in a way that only matters on a machine with accessories: curb weight names fuel, oil and coolant specifically, while unloaded vehicle weight says all fluids necessary for operation and then explicitly throws out anything “ordinarily removed from the vehicle when they are not in use”. On a touring bike with quick-detach panniers, those words do work.
And the third American number is not a measurement at all.
Gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle.
Specified. Chosen, declared, printed. It is an engineering judgement about how much the whole machine is allowed to weigh once it is loaded, and it is the one weight figure on a motorcycle that has a legally mandated home. More on where to find it in a moment.
For the record, the same section also defines what a motorcycle is, and the definition is broader than most riders assume:
Motorcycle means a motor vehicle with motive power having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground.
Three wheels. Which is why the honest answer to how much a motorcycle weighs has a much wider top end than anybody expects, as the numbers further down show. The same regulation and the same wording sit behind the line between a moped, a scooter and a motorcycle, which is a separate rabbit hole with its own count of zeros.
The seven official weights of a motorcycle
Put both systems on the table and the count comes out at seven. European law supplies four, three of them from Delegated Regulation (EU) No 44/2014, the act that supplements 168/2013 on vehicle construction and whose Annex XI is titled Requirements applying to masses and dimensions.

Note what the second row does. Actual mass is defined as:
‘actual mass’ in relation to a vehicle means the mass in running order as referred to in Article 5 of Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, plus the mass of the driver (75 kg), plus the mass of the alternative propellant storage if applicable and plus the mass of optional equipment fitted to an individual vehicle
The 75 kg rider comes back. In European law, the actual mass of your motorcycle includes a person who is not on it. And because pay-mass is measured from actual mass, the European payload figure already has that standard rider subtracted out of it — which is a different accounting from the maximum load figure printed in your owner’s manual. That figure, and what you are allowed to stack on top of it, is the subject of the number in your manual that decides whether you can carry a passenger, and I am deliberately not re-deriving it here.
The word that is in none of them
Here is the count, run on the full texts rather than from memory.
In Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, as adopted and again in the version consolidated to 27 November 2024, the phrase dry weight appears zero times. So does dry mass. So does kerb, and so does curb. In Delegated Regulation (EU) No 44/2014, the act that lays down how the masses of a two-wheeler are determined and declared: zero, zero, zero, zero. In 49 CFR 571.3, dry weight appears zero times.
Three documents, three legal systems, and the term that half the motorcycle industry prints in its brochures has no definition in any of them.
That matters for one practical reason. A defined quantity can be checked. If a manufacturer declares a mass in running order, an approval authority can put the bike on a scale with the tank at 90 per cent and see whether the number holds. A dry weight cannot be checked, because nobody has said what has to be drained. Oil? Coolant? Brake fluid? The battery acid? Two manufacturers using the same words can be measuring machines in two different states of undress, and both are telling the truth as they define it.
What the manufacturers actually print
This is where it stops being a legal argument and starts being an afternoon of comparing tables. Every figure below is from the manufacturer’s own current specification page, quoted with its own label attached.
KTM is the clearest case, because a single model publishes both numbers in the same block. On the 2026 390 Enduro R the Dimensions section reads:
Seat height 890 mm · Tank capacity (approx.) 9 l · Ground clearance 272 mm · Weight (without fuel) 159 kg · Weight fully fueled 165 kg
One bike, two weights, six kilos apart, printed one line from each other. Nine litres of petrol, by KTM’s own arithmetic, is those six kilos — roughly two thirds of a kilo per litre. That is the entire dry-versus-wet argument, resolved by a manufacturer who simply publishes both instead of picking one.
Then it gets awkward. The 2024 390 Duke page, still live, reads:
Seat height 820 mm · Weight (without fuel) 165 kg
And the 2026 390 Duke page reads:
Seat height 820/800 mm · Weight fully fueled 165 kg
The same figure, 165 kg, under two labels that mean opposite things, on the same manufacturer’s own website. I am not going to guess which page is the typo, because the point stands either way: a rider comparing a 2024 spec sheet to a 2026 one is comparing two quantities that happen to share a number.
Ducati’s three-word contradiction
Ducati publishes, for the Monster and the Monster+:
Wet weight no fuel 395 lb (179 kg)
Read it as a sentence and it eats itself. Wet, meaning all the fluids are in. No fuel, meaning the biggest fluid is out. It is, in fact, exactly the same quantity KTM calls “Weight (without fuel)” — the machine with oil and coolant and brake fluid, and an empty tank — and Ducati has chosen the one label that makes it sound like the opposite.
To Ducati’s credit, the convention is applied consistently across the whole range, which makes the model list genuinely comparable within the brand: 227 lb for the Desmo250 MX, 264 lb for the Desmo450 EDS, 463 lb for the DesertX, 492 lb for the Diavel V4, all tagged Wet Weight (No Fuel). And the Monster’s tank capacity is published on the same page, 14 litres, so the reader can do the sum that the label declines to do. Fourteen litres, at the two thirds of a kilo per litre KTM’s own pair of figures implies, is around nine kilos that the 179 kg does not include.
Harley-Davidson borrowed the legal phrase
Harley-Davidson is the one large manufacturer I found that publishes the European legal term on an American website. Its specification tables say, in this exact form:
Weight, In Running Order 811 lb.
That is the 2026 Street Glide. The Nightster is 481 lb, the Road Glide 838 lb, and the Tri Glide Ultra — a three-wheeler, and therefore still a motorcycle under the federal definition quoted above — is 1,237 lb.
Whether Harley measures to the letter of Article 5 or to its own house rule, the label at least tells you which state the machine is in: running order, fluids and fuel included. It is the most useful of the four brochure conventions I collected, for the plain reason that it describes the motorcycle you will actually be sitting on.
So how much does a motorcycle weigh, honestly
With the labels attached, here is the range, built only from figures the manufacturers publish about their current models.

A hundred kilos to five hundred and sixty. That is the true answer to the question, and any single average you read is an average of a set somebody chose without telling you.
If you want a rule of thumb that survives contact with a showroom: a small single-cylinder road bike lands near 160 kg, a mid-size naked or a middleweight adventure bike lands between 180 and 215 kg, a full-dress tourer lands between 360 and 380 kg, and a competition dirt bike lands near 100 kg with an empty tank. Then check the label on the specific machine, because within any one of those bands the spread between two rivals is smaller than the spread between two ways of measuring the same one.
The number on your steering head
There is one weight figure on a motorcycle that is not in a brochure at all. It is riveted to the bike, and American federal law says precisely where.
The label for motorcycles shall be affixed to a permanent member of the vehicle as close as is practicable to the intersection of the steering post with the handle bars, in a location such that it is easily readable without moving any part of the vehicle except the steering system.
That is 49 CFR 567.4(e). Look at the top of the frame just behind the steering head, and on a bike built for the American market there is a certification label. Among the statements it must carry:
“Gross Vehicle Weight Rating” or “GVWR” followed by the appropriate value in pounds, which shall not be less than the sum of the unloaded vehicle weight, rated cargo load, and 150 pounds times the number of the vehicle’s designated seating positions.
Two things there are worth keeping. The GVWR must be at least the empty bike plus the cargo it is rated for plus 150 pounds per seat — so the federal floor assumes each person aboard weighs 150 lb, about 68 kg. European law assigns 75 kg to the rider and 65 kg to the passenger. Same idea, three different constants, none of them anybody real.
And once again: what you may put on the bike, and what happens to the handling when you do, is the maximum load question, not this one. This article is about how much the machine weighs before you touch it.
Seat height is the only body measurement in European vehicle law
Now the half of the question that riders actually feel. Nobody stands in a showroom worrying about a kilogram; they worry about whether their feet reach and whether they can hold the thing up at a petrol station on camber.
The surprise is that seat height has legal standing at all. In Regulation 168/2013, the phrase appears exactly twice, and both times it is doing real work: enduro motorcycles need a seat height of 900 mm or more, trial motorcycles 700 mm or less. Those are not recommendations. They are classification criteria, with tax and licence consequences attached.
And here is the gap. Delegated Regulation (EU) No 44/2014 is the act that supplements the regulation on vehicle construction, and its Annex XI opens with this:
This Annex lays down the requirements for the type-approval of L-category vehicles with regard to their masses and dimensions.
Masses and dimensions. The place where a measurement method would live. The phrase seat height appears in that entire regulation zero times.
So European law will classify a motorcycle by how tall its seat is, and will not tell anybody how to measure it. Whether the suspension is loaded, whether the tyres are at pressure, where on the saddle the tape goes — none of it is written down where I could find it. Which is exactly why the brochures do not agree.
Harley’s seat height belongs to an 81.7 kg stranger
I found the sharpest example of that gap in a footnote, and only after digging into the page source, because the marker is a bare plus sign next to the number.
Harley-Davidson does not publish seat height. It publishes Seat Height, Laden — 26.4 in. on the Street Glide, 27.1 in. on the Nightster, 26.6 in. on the Road Glide. And the footnote attached to it reads, in full:
Measurement reflects 180 lb. (81.7 kg) operator weight.
Sit with that. The height printed in the specification is the height of the seat with a specific person on it. Not you: a rider who weighs 81.7 kg, compressing the suspension by however much that bike’s springs give. If you weigh 60 kg, the saddle you swing a leg over is higher than the number. If you weigh 110 kg, it is lower.
To be fair, this is the most useful convention of the three. A laden figure describes the moment that matters, which is when you are on the bike trying to get a boot down. But it only helps if you know it is laden, and the only place that says so is a plus sign.
Other manufacturers publish what is almost certainly an unladen figure and attach no footnote at all: KTM’s 890 mm on the 390 Enduro R, 820 mm on the 390 Duke. Compare a Harley number to a KTM number and you are comparing a compressed motorcycle to a static one.
Four seat heights, one Ducati
The other thing the brochures do is quietly admit that seat height is adjustable, if you pay. The Ducati Monster page publishes, for a single model:

Four heights for one motorcycle, a span of 65 mm, all from the factory’s own catalogue. This is the honest answer to how to lower a motorcycle, and it comes from the manufacturer rather than from a forum: for a lot of current models, the first 20 to 45 mm is a part number. A lower seat changes the saddle. A lowering kit changes the suspension, and therefore changes ground clearance and, on some bikes, the side-stand geometry too — which is why the factory sells them as a pair rather than as a suspension part alone.
If a bike is close but not quite, the sequence that costs least and breaks least is: thinner seat first, suspension preload adjustment second, lowering hardware third, taller boots any time. Shaving a seat is irreversible; changing suspension geometry has consequences everywhere else.
What the official manual says instead of a number
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation publishes the Motorcycle Operator Manual, the booklet that sits behind the rider handbooks American states hand out, and there is a short section in it called The Right Motorcycle For You. In its entirety, on the fit question, it says:
First, make sure your motorcycle is right for you. It should “fit” you. Your feet should reach the ground while you are seated on the motorcycle, and the controls should be easy to operate. Smaller motorcycles are usually easier for beginners to operate.
That is the whole official test, and I have counted what is not in it: across the entire manual, the phrase seat height appears zero times. The document that tells a new rider the machine must fit never once mentions the number that every brochure prints.
The sentence it uses instead is better, for three reasons. It is measured on the actual rider and the actual bike, with the suspension loaded and the tyres at pressure. It says feet should reach the ground, not that they should be flat — reaching is a lower bar than flat-footing, and honest about it. And it puts the controls in the same breath as the ground, which is the half of ergonomics that never makes it into a comparison table: bar reach, lever span, peg position, whether you can work the rear brake without moving your foot off the peg.
The same manual is the source I keep going back to for what riding a motorcycle actually involves, and this is a good example of why: it answers with a procedure where a spec sheet answers with a figure.
What the weight actually does, standing still and moving
Two riders can quote the same 210 kg and mean completely different experiences, because the number says nothing about where the mass sits. One machine ignores the number completely. The inductive loop buried under a traffic light responds to the shape of the conductor passing over it, not to its mass — which is why two state statutes that blame a motorcycle’s weight for not tripping the sensor are quoting physics the federal handbook contradicts.
Standing still, what you hold up is not the weight, it is the lean angle and the leverage. A tall adventure bike with its fuel high up and its bars wide will fight you at a standstill in a way a heavier cruiser with a low saddle and a low tank will not, even though the cruiser weighs sixty kilos more. That is why the Harley numbers in the table above are startling on paper and less startling in a car park: the machine is heavy and the centre of mass is very low.
Moving, above walking pace, the weight nearly disappears from the experience and reappears in two specific places: how hard the brakes have to work, and how much the bike wants to keep going in the direction it is already going. Loaded, that second effect is the one to respect.
There is also a plain physical fact about lifting a fallen motorcycle that no spec sheet gives you: what you have to overcome is not the whole mass, it is the mass rotating around the point where it is resting. Getting a 200 kg bike off its side is a technique problem before it is a strength problem — back to the seat, bars in one hand, a grip low on the frame with the other, and legs doing the work in small steps. Practising it once in a soft field, deliberately, with the fuel low, is worth more than any figure in this article.
None of that comes from a document, so I am labelling it plainly: that paragraph is my experience and the physics, not a citation.
Where RideLog fits, and where it does not

The connection that is real is fuel. Every fill-up you log is a volume, and a volume of petrol is a mass — by KTM’s own pair of figures, roughly two thirds of a kilo per litre. So the fuel log is the one part of your motorcycle’s weight that you already measure, every week, without thinking of it as weight. A 20-litre tourer tank is on the order of thirteen kilos that leaves the bike between the pump and the reserve light, and the app’s consumption history is where that swing is visible.
The other connection is fit, sideways. If you own more than one motorcycle, the trip log answers the fit question without any tape measure: the bike you actually take out is the one that fits you. I have watched that number tell people the truth about a purchase more than once.
Now the limits, because the point of writing this section is to be useful and not to sell. RideLog does not weigh your motorcycle and has no way to. It does not know your seat height, your inseam or whether you can flat-foot. It does not read the GVWR label, it cannot tell you when you are over the maximum load — that number is in your manual and the arithmetic is yours — and it is not a navigator. The distance it records is what your phone’s GPS measured, which is plenty to run service intervals from and is not a legal odometer reading.

What I check before buying a motorcycle, in this order
The documents compress into a short routine that takes about ten minutes in a showroom.
- Find the weight figure and read its label out loud. If it says dry, or gives no label at all, treat it as unknown rather than as low.
- If the label says without fuel or wet weight no fuel, add the tank. Multiply the published capacity in litres by about two thirds of a kilo and add it, then compare that total to the next bike.
- Find the seat height figure and look for a footnote. Laden and unladen are not the same measurement, and a plus sign is the only warning you will get.
- Ignore both numbers for five minutes and sit on the bike, with the side stand up and the engine off, feet down, hands on the bars. That is the official test, and it beats the table.
- Walk it. Off the stand, engine off, two or three metres forward and a turn. Everything you need to know about the mass and where it sits is in that walk.
- Check what the factory catalogue offers in seat and suspension options before you decide the bike is too tall. On a lot of current models the first 40 mm is an accessory.
- Look behind the steering head for the certification label and read the GVWR, then go and read your own manual on maximum load before you plan a two-up trip.

How much does a motorcycle weigh on average?
There is no average worth quoting, because the range is too wide and every published average is an average of a hidden sample. From current manufacturer specifications: a competition dirt bike around 103 kg with an empty tank, a small road single around 165 kg fully fuelled, a middleweight naked around 179 kg without fuel, a full-dress tourer 368 to 380 kg, and a three-wheeler — still a motorcycle under 49 CFR 571.3 — up to 561 kg. Read the label attached to whichever figure you are given.
What is the difference between dry weight and wet weight?
Wet weight means the machine with its operating fluids in it; dry weight means some of them removed, and nobody has defined which. The phrase dry weight appears zero times in Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, zero times in Delegated Regulation (EU) No 44/2014 and zero times in 49 CFR 571.3, so there is no standard to check it against. European law defines mass in running order, which is wet with the tank at least 90 per cent full. American law defines curb weight, which is wet with the tank at maximum capacity. Both are checkable. Dry weight is not.
How much does a Harley-Davidson weigh?
Harley publishes the figure as “Weight, In Running Order”, which is fluids and fuel included. On current models: Nightster 481 lb (218 kg), Street Glide 811 lb (368 kg), Road Glide 838 lb (380 kg), Tri Glide Ultra 1,237 lb (561 kg). Because the label says running order, those numbers are directly comparable to a European mass in running order and are not comparable to a Ducati or KTM figure quoted without fuel.
How much does a dirt bike weigh?
Between roughly 100 and 165 kg depending on whether the tank is counted. KTM publishes both numbers for the 2026 390 Enduro R in the same table: 159 kg without fuel and 165 kg fully fuelled, on a tank quoted at approximately 9 litres. Ducati’s Desmo250 MX is 227 lb (103 kg) under the label Wet Weight (No Fuel). European law also caps trial motorcycles at 100 kg mass in running order as a classification criterion, which is why competition trials machines cluster just under it.
Is the seat height in the brochure the seat height I will feel?
Not necessarily, and the difference can be a boot’s worth. Harley-Davidson publishes Seat Height, Laden with the footnote “Measurement reflects 180 lb. (81.7 kg) operator weight” — the height with a specific rider compressing the suspension. Most other manufacturers publish an unladen figure with no footnote. Nothing in Delegated Regulation (EU) No 44/2014, the act covering masses and dimensions, specifies how seat height is to be measured, so the conventions are the manufacturers’ own.
What seat height do I need if I am short?
The official manual does not answer in millimetres, and that is deliberate. The Motorcycle Operator Manual says only that the motorcycle should fit, that your feet should reach the ground while you are seated on it, and that the controls should be easy to operate. Reach, not flat-foot. Sit on the machine with the stand up and find out; two bikes with identical published seat heights can feel 30 mm apart depending on how wide the saddle is where your thighs cross it.
How do I lower a motorcycle?
Start with the factory catalogue, because the first step is often a part number. Ducati publishes four heights for one Monster — 820 mm standard, 800 mm with a low seat, 775 mm with a low seat plus a low suspension kit, 840 mm with a high seat — so 45 mm is available without touching anything structural. In order of increasing consequence: low seat, then suspension preload, then lowering hardware. Lowering the suspension reduces ground clearance and changes side-stand geometry, which is why manufacturers sell the seat and the kit together.
Where is the weight rating written on the motorcycle itself?
On bikes built for the American market, on the certification label. 49 CFR 567.4(e) requires that label to be affixed “as close as is practicable to the intersection of the steering post with the handle bars”, readable without moving anything but the steering. Among other statements it carries the gross vehicle weight rating, which under 567.4(a)(3) must be at least the unloaded vehicle weight plus the rated cargo load plus 150 pounds per seating position.
Does a heavier motorcycle handle worse?
Not in a way the single number predicts. Where the mass sits matters more than how much of it there is: a 380 kg cruiser with a low saddle and a low fuel load can be easier to hold at a standstill than a 210 kg adventure bike with a tall tank and wide bars. Above walking pace the weight mostly stops being something you feel and starts being something the brakes feel. The test that works is walking the machine off its stand for a few metres before you buy it.
