How Many Miles Do Motorcycles Last — and the Federal Number That Stops at 18,641

Ask how many miles do motorcycles last and the internet answers with one number, repeated on page after page: fifty thousand. Sometimes forty. Sometimes a hundred for a big touring bike. The pages saying it are dealer blogs, luggage shops, a lighting retailer, an apparel brand, a law firm and three YouTube videos. Above them sits a Reddit thread and a Facebook post where riders argue about it.

Not one of those pages is written by anybody who has to put a number on a motorcycle’s life for a living.

Some organisations do. The Environmental Protection Agency publishes one in the Code of Federal Regulations. The Federal Highway Administration publishes how far the average American motorcycle actually travels in a year, and has done so every year for decades. Yamaha and Harley-Davidson print the point at which their own service schedules stop — and what they tell you to do when you get there.

Those four documents disagree with the first page of Google, and they disagree with each other in a way that turns out to be the whole answer.

The short version, before the documents

There is no mileage at which a motorcycle stops working. There is a mileage at which the people who wrote the rules stop making promises, and a very different mileage at which riders start getting nervous, and the gap between the two is where every argument about high mileage lives.

Here is what the sources actually contain:

  • The federal emissions rulebook assigns a big motorcycle a useful life of five years or 18,641 miles, whichever comes first. It gives a car ten years or 120,000 miles.
  • The average American motorcycle covered 2,121 miles in 2023. The average car covered 11,026.
  • Yamaha’s maintenance chart runs out at 30,000 miles and tells you to go back to the 6,000-mile column and start again. Harley-Davidson’s runs out at 50,000 miles and tells you to go back to the 5,000-mile column and start again.
  • A great many of the things that finish a motorcycle are printed with a number of years next to them, not a number of miles.

Put together, they say something the fifty-thousand answer cannot: the odometer is the least informative number on a used motorcycle, and for most riders it is not even the clock that governs their own bike.

The federal government has a number, and it is 18,641 miles

Buried in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, in the subpart that has governed motorcycle emissions since 1978, there is a definition. It is not a prediction, it is not advice, and it is legally binding on every manufacturer that wants to sell a motorcycle in the United States.

Useful life is defined for each class (see § 86.419) of motorcycle: (1) Class I-A—5.0 years or 6,000 km (3,728 miles), whichever occurs first. (2) Class I-B—5.0 years or 12,000 km (7,456 miles), whichever occurs first. (3) Class II—5.0 years or 18,000 km (11,185 miles), whichever occurs first. (4) Class III—5.0 years or 30,000 km (18,641 miles), whichever occurs first.

The classes are pure displacement, defined two sections later:

Motorcycles will be divided into classes and subclasses based on engine displacement. (1) Class I—0 to 169 cc (0 to 10.4 cu. in.). […] (2) Class II—170 to 279 cc (10.4 to 17.1 cu. in.). (3) Class III—280 cc and over (17.1 cu. in. and over).

So anything from a 300 twin upward — which means essentially every motorcycle anyone reading this owns — sits in Class III, and Class III gets 18,641 miles.

What useful life means, and what it does not

This needs saying clearly, because it is the single most misreadable number in the whole article.

Useful life, in this regulation, is the period over which the manufacturer must demonstrate that the emission control system still meets the standard. It is a durability requirement for the catalytic converter, the sensors, the fuelling — the parts that keep the exhaust clean. The certification process is built around extrapolating to it:

An exhaust emission deterioration factor will be calculated by dividing the predicted emissions at the useful life distance by the predicted emissions at the total test distance.

It is not a forecast of mechanical life. It does not mean the engine is expected to fail. Nothing expires, nothing has to be scrapped, no inspection is triggered, and no rider is affected by it directly. A motorcycle at 40,000 miles is not out of compliance with anything.

What it does tell you is how long the regulator thought it was reasonable to hold a manufacturer responsible — and that is a judgement about how motorcycles are used, made by people with access to the usage data.

The same rulebook gives a car six times more

Two hundred pages away in the same title, the light-duty section defines useful life for cars:

The useful life for LDV and LDT1 is 10 years or 120,000 miles.

And for greenhouse gas standards:

The emission standards in § 86.1818 apply for a useful life of 10 years or 120,000 miles for LDV and LLDT and 11 years or 120,000 miles for HLDT and MDPV.

One agency, one code, two vehicles. The car gets 120,000 miles and ten years. The big motorcycle gets 18,641 miles and five years. That is 6.4 times the distance and twice the calendar — my arithmetic, their numbers.

Read that next to a forum insisting that 50,000 miles on a motorcycle is nothing to worry about and you have a genuine puzzle. Either the forum is wrong, or the EPA is being extraordinarily conservative, or the two are measuring different things entirely.

The average American motorcycle is ridden 2,121 miles a year

Every year the Federal Highway Administration publishes Highway Statistics, and in it Table VM-1: annual vehicle distance travelled, broken down by highway category and vehicle type. Motorcycles get their own column. So does everything else, which makes the comparison free.

The 2023 edition, updated March 2025, gives motorcycles an average of 2,121 miles travelled per vehicle. In the same row, light duty vehicles with a short wheelbase — ordinary cars, essentially — get 11,026. All motor vehicles together get 11,408.

It is not a one-year artefact. Here is the same row across the editions I pulled:

Six years, six similar numbers. A motorcycle in the United States does roughly a fifth of what a car does. The rest of the 2023 column fills in the picture: 9,516,910 registered motorcycles, 20,181 million vehicle-miles between them, and 48 gallons of fuel burned per motorcycle in the year.

What 2,121 does to the fifty-thousand answer

Take the number the internet gives you as the threshold of a high mileage motorcycle and divide it by the average.

Fifty thousand miles at 2,121 miles a year is about 23.6 years of riding. Not of ownership — of riding, at the national average, by one person, on one bike. That arithmetic is mine, but the two numbers in it are not.

Which reframes the question completely. A 2005 motorcycle with 50,000 miles on it has not been abused; it has been ridden at roughly twice the national average for twenty years, which is what a well-used, well-loved motorcycle looks like. And a 2015 motorcycle with 8,000 miles has not been carefully preserved; it has been ridden less than half the average, which usually means it spent years standing still — a condition with its own, worse, list of consequences.

Run the same division on the federal useful life and something else falls out. 18,641 miles at 2,121 a year is about 8.8 years. But the definition says five years or the distance, whichever occurs first. For the average American motorcycle, the calendar arrives nearly four years before the odometer does.

That is not a quirk of the regulation. It is the shape of motorcycle ownership, written into federal law by people who had the traffic data in front of them. And it is the same shape you will find printed in the service schedule of your own bike.

The caveats printed on the table itself

Two honest notes, because the table carries them and dropping them would be cheating.

First, these are estimates, and the FHWA says so in the footnote:

The FHWA estimates national trends by using State reported Highway Performance and Monitoring System (HPMS) data, fuel consumption data (MF-21), vehicle registration data (MV-1), other data such as the R. L. Polk vehicle data, and a host of modeling techniques.

Second, one number in the motorcycle column does not move at all. Average miles per gallon of fuel consumed is given as 44.0 in the 2019 edition, 44.0 in 2020, 44.0 in 2021 and 44.0 in 2023, while the car figure wanders between 24.1 and 24.8. A value that does not shift by a tenth in five years is a modelling coefficient, not a measurement. I use the mileage figures because they do move, and I would not quote that 44.0 as anybody’s real fuel consumption. Both factory schedules end at 50,000 — and both say start over

Here is where the manufacturers walk into the argument, and they do it from an angle nobody expects.

Neither Yamaha nor Harley-Davidson publishes a life expectancy for a motorcycle. What they publish is a maintenance chart with columns, and the columns eventually stop, because a printed table has to. The interesting part is the instruction they print underneath.

Yamaha, the identical sentence ten years apart

The MT-07 owner’s manual was printed in October 2014. The XSR900 GP manual is current. Different engines, different decades, different market positioning. Same sentence, word for word, in the tip box above the periodic maintenance chart:

From 50000 km (30000 mi), repeat the maintenance intervals starting from 10000 km (6000 mi).

That is a manufacturer telling you, in the only document it legally owes you, that at 30,000 miles you go back to the 6,000-mile row and do it all again. There is no final column. There is no note about approaching the end of the machine’s life. The chart is a loop.

Harley-Davidson, nine times in one document

The 2018 Maintenance Schedules booklet covers every family in the range — Sportster, Touring, Softail, Trike, Police — with a separate table for each. The tables run from 1,000 miles and then every 5,000 miles, and the last column on every one of them is 50,000 mi (80,000 km).

Under each table, once per family and therefore nine times in the document, the same line:

After completing the final service interval, repeat the service schedule starting at the 5000 mi (8,000 km) interval.

So the number that the internet has settled on as the point where a motorcycle becomes a high mileage motorcycle is, in Harley-Davidson’s own paperwork, precisely the point at which you turn back to page one.

I find this genuinely funny, and also the most useful single fact in this article. If the company that built the bike had an opinion about 50,000 miles being the end, that opinion would appear right there, at the bottom of the last column. What appears instead is an instruction to keep going.

The clock that actually governs your motorcycle is the calendar

Once you have the 2,121 figure in your head, the maintenance charts read differently. Look at what the manufacturers attach to years rather than miles.

Harley-Davidson puts it in a sentence, in the introduction to the schedules:

Some maintenance items are scheduled at least once per year, even if the next mileage interval has not been reached.

And in note 1, which appears under every single table in the booklet:

Perform annually or at specified intervals, whichever comes first.

Yamaha says the same thing in its own words, in the same tip box as the loop instruction:

The annual checks must be performed every year, except if a kilometer-based maintenance, or for the UK, a mileage-based maintenance, is performed instead.

The current XSR900 GP manual phrases it as “The annual checks must be performed every year, except if a distance-based maintenance is performed instead.”

Then look at the individual items. From the Harley-Davidson tables:

Flush brake system and replace DOT 4 hydraulic brake fluid every two years or sooner if moisture content is 3% or greater

Replace spark plugs every two years or every 30,000 mi (48,000 km), whichever comes first.

Replace fuel filter element every 100000 mi (161,000 km).

Three items, three different clocks. The brake fluid is pure calendar. The spark plugs are two years or 30,000 miles, and at the national average the two years arrive after about 4,200 miles — the calendar wins by a factor of seven. The fuel filter is 100,000 miles with no year attached at all, which at 2,121 miles a year is 47 years away and effectively means never. Every division in this section is mine; only the intervals and the 2,121 come from the sources.

This is what the service schedule looks like once you stop reading it as a mileage list. For most riders the odometer is the secondary trigger, and the reason so many well-meaning owners fall behind is that the kilometre columns simply never arrive. The brake fluid case is the clearest example of a calendar item that has nothing to do with distance, because the water gets in while the bike is parked. That mechanism, and the manufacturers’ own numbers on it, is the subject of the brake fluid piece.

The division worth doing once

There is one calculation that tells you which clock governs your motorcycle, and it takes ten seconds.

Take a mileage interval from your manual. Divide it by the miles you actually ride in a year. If the answer is more than one, the calendar governs that item and the odometer is decoration. If it is less than one, the mileage governs.

At the national average of 2,121 miles a year, a 6,000-mile service interval is a 2.8-year event — again, every division in this section is mine, run on the manufacturers’ intervals and the FHWA average. A rider doing 12,000 miles a year hits that same interval twice in a season. Same bike, same manual, two completely different maintenance lives, and the only variable is a number that almost nobody actually knows about themselves.

Which is the honest reason this article ends up talking about tracking your riding at all. Hold that thought.

The thousand miles that decide the rest

If there is a mileage that genuinely matters to how long an engine lasts, the manufacturers agree on which one it is, and it is not fifty thousand.

Both Yamaha manuals open the break-in section with the same sentence:

There is never a more important period in the life of your engine than the period between 0 and 1600 km (1000 mi).

Not the most important period in the first year. In the life of the engine. And the reason given is mechanical, not ceremonial:

Since the engine is brand new, do not put an excessive load on it for the first 1600 km (1000 mi). The various parts in the engine wear and polish themselves to the correct operating clearances. During this period, prolonged full-throttle operation or any condition that might result in engine overheating must be avoided.

The instructions are specific, in two bands:

0–1000 km (0–600 mi) Avoid prolonged operation above 5000 r/min.

1000–1600 km (600–1000 mi) Avoid prolonged operation above 6000 r/min.

There is a consequence to this that changes how you look at a used bike. Whether those first 600 miles were ridden the way the manual describes is invisible on the odometer, unrecorded on any document, and known only to whoever did it. On a bike with two previous owners it is unknowable. It is also, according to the manufacturer, the period that mattered most.

So when somebody asks how many miles is a lot for a motorcycle, the manual’s implicit answer is: the wrong thousand miles is worse than the right fifty thousand.

The line that never expires

One more sentence from the same manuals, and this one is not about break-in at all. It appears in the starting and shifting section, and both the 2014 MT-07 and the current XSR900 GP carry it identically:

For maximum engine life, never accelerate hard when the engine is cold!

That is the only place in either manual where the phrase “maximum engine life” appears, and it is attached to a habit, not a number. Cold starts, repeated for years, are a mileage-independent way of wearing out an engine — which is another reason a low-mileage bike used for short trips can be in worse shape than a high-mileage bike used for long ones. What the odometer legally is, and when it stops being anyone’s problem

If the number on the clock is going to carry the weight of a purchase decision, it is worth knowing what it legally is. In the United States it is a federal disclosure, governed by Part 580 of Title 49.

The definition is short:

Mileage means actual distance that a vehicle has traveled.

The duty is on the seller:

In connection with the transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle, the transferor shall disclose the mileage to the transferee on the physical or electronic title…

And it comes with a certification:

The transferor shall certify that to the best of their knowledge the odometer reading reflects the actual mileage

Motorcycles are not carved out of this. The exemptions in the rule are for vehicles over 16,000 pounds gross weight, vehicles that are not self-propelled, and a handful of government sales — not for two wheels.

The exemption that arrives with age

Then there is § 580.17, and this is the part almost nobody knows.

A vehicle manufactured in or before the 2010 model year that is transferred at least 10 years after January 1 of the calendar year corresponding to its designated model year

is exempt from disclosure. The regulation gives its own example:

Example to paragraph (a)(3): For vehicle transfers occurring during calendar year 2020, model year 2010 or older vehicles are exempt.

For newer machines the clock was doubled:

A vehicle manufactured in or after the 2011 model year that is transferred at least 20 years after January 1 of the calendar year corresponding to its designated model year

with its own worked example:

Example to paragraph (a)(4): For vehicle transfers occurring during calendar year 2031, model year 2011 or older vehicles are exempt.

So there are two regimes running side by side. A 2008 motorcycle sold today comes with no federal odometer disclosure at all — nobody is certifying anything. A 2015 motorcycle sold today does, and will keep doing so until 2036.

That is a genuinely useful thing to hold in your head at a private sale. On an older bike, the number on the clock is a claim. On a 2011-or-later bike, it is a claim that somebody has signed their name to.

Britain does it the other way round

The United Kingdom solved the same problem from the opposite end. Rather than putting the duty on the seller at the moment of sale, it records the odometer at every roadworthiness test and publishes the lot.

The DVSA service page says what it contains:

Check the past results of a vehicle’s MOT tests, including: if it passed or failed […] the mileage recorded when it was tested

And how far back it goes:

For cars, motorcycles and vans you can only get results for tests done since 2005.

So a British motorcycle carries a free, public, year-by-year mileage history going back two decades, and any inconsistency in it is visible to anyone who looks. It records the reading at the test, which is not the same as certifying that the reading is honest — but a sequence of readings is much harder to fake than a single one.

If you are buying used, that difference is worth more than any rule of thumb about high mileage. A number with a history behind it means something. A number on its own means whatever the seller wants it to mean.

So what actually finishes a motorcycle

Nothing in these documents supports the idea of a mileage at which a motorcycle is used up. What they do support, taken together, is a list of things that finish motorcycles early, and mileage is not at the top of it.

Calendar items that were never done

The brake fluid that was supposed to be flushed every two years and has been in there for nine. The coolant. The tyres, which age whether or not they turn: the manufacturers’ own position on tyre age and repair, including the fact that a repair permanently voids the speed rating, is in the flat tyre piece, and the wear and pressure side is in the tyre guide. Every one of these is invisible on the odometer and expensive to discover late.

The same logic applies to the helmet on your head, incidentally, and for the same reason: the replacement rule scales with how much you use it, and almost nobody knows how much they use it. That argument, with the manufacturers contradicting each other in public, is here.

Standing still

A motorcycle that does not move ages on the calendar without touching the odometer. The battery is usually the first thing to complain, which is its own story, and the list of everything else that needs checking after a layoff is the spring preparation checklist.

This is the honest counterweight to low-mileage listings. Eight thousand miles on a ten-year-old bike is 800 a year, which is under half the national average, which usually means long periods parked. Ask what the fluid and battery history looks like before you treat that number as good news.

Wear parts, which are not the motorcycle

Chains, sprockets, pads, discs, cables and clutch plates all wear with use, and all of them are consumables with published replacement criteria. A bike that has had three chains is a bike that has been ridden, not a bike that is finished — the chain maintenance piece gives one manufacturer’s own expectation for its sealed chains, and the clutch adjustment piece covers the case where the adjustment everybody talks about does not exist on your bike at all.

The MSF’s framing of all this is the plainest I have found:

Wear and tear is normal with use; routine maintenance will help prevent costly breakdowns. The schedule for regular upkeep for motorcycle parts and controls is contained in the motorcycle’s owner’s manual.

And, one paragraph earlier:

A motorcycle will continue to ride like new if it is maintained and routine inspections become part of its maintenance.

That is a conditional sentence, and the condition is not a mileage.

Money, which is mine to say and not in any document

The last one is my opinion rather than a sourced fact, so I will label it as such: most motorcycles are not retired because something failed, they are retired because the next repair costs more than the bike is worth to its owner. That is an economic threshold, it moves with the model, and it has very little to do with what the engine is capable of. No document in this article says it. I have watched it happen enough times to believe it.

Reading a high-mileage bike you are thinking of buying

If you take the position that mileage is a weak signal, you need something to replace it with. Here is what the sources suggest is worth asking, in order.

Ask for the schedule, not the number

The manufacturer’s chart is public and specific. On a Harley the columns are 1,000 miles and then every 5,000. On a Yamaha they are 1,000 km and then every 10,000 km. Ask which of those columns have been done, and when. A bike at 45,000 miles with nine documented services is in better condition than a bike at 12,000 with none, and both of those facts are checkable in a way that a listing describing itself as a low-mileage example is not.

Ask for the years, not just the miles

Everything the manufacturers put on an annual or two-year cycle is due on a calendar the seller cannot argue with. Brake fluid dated within two years. Spark plugs within two years or 30,000 miles. Coolant. Tyres, whose date code is moulded into the sidewall. These have physical evidence attached, which claimed mileage does not.

Check what the clock is legally worth

Look at the model year. In the United States, a 2011-or-later machine still carries a federal odometer disclosure at every transfer; a 2010-or-earlier one lost that protection ten years after its model year. In Britain, pull the MOT history and read the sequence of recorded mileages, which is free and takes a minute.

Then look at the bike

None of this replaces the physical inspection, and the pre-ride list you would run on your own machine is a reasonable starting point on somebody else’s: the pre-ride checks cover what you can see and feel in five minutes, and the basic mechanics guide covers what you can check yourself once it is in your garage. The number nobody has: your own miles per year

Everything above converges on one gap. The manufacturers’ schedules are written in miles and years together. The regulator’s definitions are written in miles and years together. Which of the two governs your motorcycle depends entirely on a number about yourself — how far you actually ride in a year — and almost nobody knows it.

People guess, and they guess badly in both directions. Riders who take two long trips a season overestimate, because the trips are memorable and the commuting is not. What a daily ride to work does to that arithmetic is measured in the motorcycle commuting article. Riders who use the bike for short local journeys underestimate, because no single ride feels significant. The national average of 2,121 miles is a useful sanity check, but it is an average across nine and a half million machines, including plenty that barely move.

What it does not do, and I would rather say it here than have you find out: it does not read your bike’s odometer, its ECU, or its VIN. The distance is the distance your phone travelled with you, from GPS. That is accurate enough to tell you whether your service intervals are governed by the calendar or by the clock, and it is not a legal odometer reading — for a warranty claim or a sale, read the instrument. It also cannot verify anybody else’s claimed mileage. Nothing on a phone can.

What I would actually tell someone asking

If a friend sent me a listing and asked whether the mileage was too high, the answer would not contain a number.

It would be this: the federal emissions rulebook stops promising at 18,641 miles and gives cars six times more; the average American motorcycle covers 2,121 miles a year, so fifty thousand is roughly twenty-four years of average riding; and both Yamaha and Harley-Davidson end their service charts around that point with an instruction to start over. Nothing in any of those documents describes a motorcycle wearing out at a mileage. What they describe is a machine with a maintenance loop that does not terminate, and a list of items that come due in years.

So ask for the service history and the dates. Look at the tyre codes and the brake fluid. Find out what the model year means for the odometer disclosure where you live. And treat the number on the clock as one piece of evidence among several, weaker than any of the documented ones.

How many miles do motorcycles last?

No primary source gives a mileage at which a motorcycle is finished, and the manufacturers’ own documents point the other way. Yamaha’s maintenance chart instructs owners that “from 50000 km (30000 mi), repeat the maintenance intervals starting from 10000 km (6000 mi)”, and Harley-Davidson’s 2018 schedules say “after completing the final service interval, repeat the service schedule starting at the 5000 mi (8,000 km) interval”. Both charts end at the point commonly called high mileage and both tell you to begin again. What limits a motorcycle in practice is maintenance that was skipped, time spent standing still, and the cost of the next repair relative to the bike’s value.

How many miles is a lot for a motorcycle?

It depends far more on the years than on the miles. The Federal Highway Administration puts the average distance travelled per motorcycle in the United States at 2,121 miles in 2023, against 11,026 for a car. At that rate 50,000 miles represents roughly 23.6 years of average riding, which is arithmetic on the FHWA figures rather than a published finding. A bike well above the average has usually been used as intended; a bike well below it has often been parked, which brings its own problems.

What is the average motorcycle mileage per year?

The FHWA’s Table VM-1 gives 2,121 miles per motorcycle for 2023, 2,587 for 2022, 2,084 for 2021, 2,150 for 2020, 2,290 for 2019 and 2,317 for 2018. The FHWA states these are national estimates built from state-reported data, fuel consumption data, registration data and modelling, so they describe the fleet rather than any individual rider.

Does the government say how long a motorcycle lasts?

Not in the sense people expect, but there is a number. Under 40 CFR Part 86, the useful life of a Class III motorcycle — 280 cc and over — a threshold that has nothing to do with the categories a rider is licensed under, which are set by design speed and displacement instead — — is “5.0 years or 30,000 km (18,641 miles), whichever occurs first”. Smaller classes get less: 18,000 km for Class II, 12,000 km for Class I-B. This is the period over which the manufacturer must show that the emission control system still meets the standard. It is not a durability forecast for the machine, it triggers no inspection, and it obliges the owner to do nothing.
