Somewhere inside your helmet, under the lining or on a label sewn to the chinstrap, there is a date. It is the month and year the helmet was built, and in the United States printing it is not a courtesy — it is a federal requirement. So the helmet on your shelf knows exactly how old it is. What nobody prints anywhere on it is when it stops working.
That gap is the whole subject. Ask how long does a motorcycle helmet last and you get one number back, everywhere, instantly: five years. It is on manufacturer sites, on forums, in shop windows, in the mouth of every rider who has ever heard it from another rider. I wanted to read the study behind it. So I went to the American federal standard, the manual American states build their riding tests on, the foundation that produced the number in the first place, the safety instructions that ship with a Shoei, Arai’s warranty terms, Agv’s own technical answers, and the helmet-testing programme run by the British Department for Transport.
There is no study. The organisation that invented the five-year figure calls it a judgement call. The government body that smashes helmets for a living says it is not aware of any independent test that answers the question at all. And the two of them contradict each other, in writing, on the two situations riders actually ask about: the helmet that has been sitting unused in a cupboard, and the helmet that just fell off the seat.
The five-year rule has an author, and the author calls it a judgement call
The Snell Memorial Foundation exists because of a crash. William “Pete” Snell was the Sports Car Club of America’s Racer of the Year when he died in a 1956 event; the foundation’s own account says his then state-of-the-art helmet, “made of leather and pressed cardboard paper, didn’t protect him”. A group of his friends and fellow racers, including Dr George Snively, set up the foundation the following year to write helmet performance standards.
Snell is also where the five years comes from. Its own FAQ answers the question under the heading “Why should you replace your helmet every five years?”, and the answer is startlingly modest:
Replacing helmets every five years is a judgement call based on testing helmets used by the California Highway Patrol by Dr. George Snively.
A judgement call. Based on a sample of police helmets. That is the documented origin of the most-repeated number in motorcycling, and the organisation that made the call is the one telling you it was a call rather than a finding.
It gets more interesting, because Snell then explains the mechanism — and the mechanism is not the one everybody assumes:
Wear and tear, the simple act of putting on and taking off helmets, damage the comfort pads and energy absorbing foam liner over time. Helmets with worn-out pads are at least one to two sizes larger than helmets in new condition. A poorly fitted helmet makes it more likely that the helmet will shift too much or even come off the head during a crash impact.
For these reasons, Snell recommends replacing helmet after five years of normal use.
Read that again. The reason to bin a five-year-old helmet, according to the body that set the interval, is that it has quietly become one or two sizes too big. It is a fit problem, not a chemistry problem. Which means the thing you should be checking is not the calendar — it is whether the helmet still holds your head.
And then the sentence that half the internet gets backwards:
Unused helmets stored in good condition do not automatically expire after five years.
The people who test helmets for the British government say the test does not exist
SHARP is the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme, run by the United Kingdom’s Department for Transport. It buys helmets, destroys them in a laboratory, and publishes star ratings. If any organisation in the world were in a position to tell you how long a helmet lasts, it would be this one.
Here is how its answer opens:
…not aware of independent tests to say how long a helmet should last, but the helmet designers and helmet testers agree that the best general advice is to plan to replace your helmet every five years, or sooner.
A state helmet-testing programme, saying in public that it knows of no independent test on the single most repeated claim in helmet safety, and falling back on what designers and testers agree. That is not a scandal — it is an honest admission that the number is a convention rather than a measurement. But it is worth knowing before you throw away a helmet you like.
SHARP does not stop at five, either. Its reasoning splits the rule in two:
Helmets deteriorate with age, regardless of use. The protection they provide will decline with time. For this reason, helmet manufacturers recommend that riders should replace a helmet after 3 to 5 years. If you wear the same helmet frequently, you should think about replacing it sooner, simply because of general wear and because the lining will compress over time, making the fit looser, which reduces the protection afforded to your brain.
And on its helmet care page, in one line:
A motorcycle helmet generally has a life of around five years; three years if used regularly.
Three years if you ride a lot. That is a completely different rule from the one people repeat, and it is the one almost nobody applies to themselves — partly because most riders have no accurate idea how much they actually ride.
Where the two authorities openly disagree: the helmet in the cupboard
Snell says an unused helmet stored in good condition does not automatically expire after five years. SHARP says helmets deteriorate with age regardless of use, and then gives the most memorable image in any of the eight documents I read:
Helmets are just like shoes: you can put them away in a cupboard, and take them out five years later, never worn, looking like new, but they fall apart the first time you wear them.
Both statements are published by organisations whose entire purpose is helmet safety. They cannot both be the whole truth, and neither of them is hedging. If you have a spare lid that has spent four years in a box, the honest answer to “is it still good” is that the two most credible sources in the field disagree, and that the disagreement itself is the useful information: it tells you this is a judgement, not a measurement, and that you are allowed to make the judgement yourself with your eyes and your hands rather than with a calendar.
What the American federal rule prints — and what it very carefully does not
The American federal standard for motorcycle helmets is FMVSS No. 218, codified at 49 CFR § 571.218. It is the reason the DOT sticker exists. I read the current edition end to end: 3,734 words, 67 mentions of the word “helmet”.
Number of times it uses the word “expire”: zero. “Five years”: zero. “Service life”: zero. “Shelf life”: zero. “Deteriorate”: zero. The word “age”, on its own, does not appear at all — the only times those three letters show up, they are inside damaged, damage and agents.
What the rule does require is a birth certificate. Section S5.6.1 says each helmet must be labelled permanently and legibly, “in a manner such that the label(s) can be read easily without removing padding or any other permanent part”, with the manufacturer’s name, the discrete size, and:
(c) Month and year of manufacture. This may be spelled out (for example, June 2010), or expressed in numerals (for example, 6/10).
So the law that governs every DOT-stamped helmet sold in America forces the factory to stamp the day it was born and says nothing whatsoever about the day it dies. That asymmetry is not an oversight. A standard regulates how a product is built and labelled at the moment of sale; it has no mechanism for reaching into your garage five years later. But it does mean that anyone telling you a helmet “expires by law” is describing a law that does not exist.
The only “replace” in the whole standard is triggered by a blow, not a birthday
There is exactly one occurrence of the word “replace” in FMVSS 218, and it is inside the block of text the manufacturer is required to print for the buyer:
Make no modifications. Fasten helmet securely. If helmet experiences a severe blow, return it to the manufacturer for inspection, or destroy it and replace it.
An event, not a duration. The federal rule’s single replacement trigger is an impact, and its recommended response is either factory inspection or destruction — note that it says destroy, not sell, which turns out to be a theme.
Worth adding, because it explains a lot about the helmet market: the DOT label is not a government test certificate. Section S5.6.2 describes it as a label “constituting the manufacturer’s certification that the helmet conforms to the applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards”. The maker certifies itself. Snell, by contrast, is explicit about where it sits. It calls DOT and ECE the law of the land in America and in European Union countries, and then adds:
Although government standards are required, they also are the minimal standards.
Snell Standards are voluntary.
Which is a useful frame for the whole subject. The certification on the label is a floor, and the five-year figure sits well above that floor, in the territory of advice.
The manual American states teach from mentions helmets 22 times and never says “replace”
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Motorcycle Operator Manual is the book behind a great many American licence tests. It runs to 20,325 words. “Helmet” appears 22 times. “Replace” appears zero times. The string “year” appears exactly once in the whole manual, and it is in the chapter about drink-driving convictions — “Years ago, first offenders had a good chance of getting off with a small fine” — not about equipment.
Its entire test for whether a helmet is fit to wear is visual and physical:
Is designed to meet U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and state standards. Helmets with a label from the Snell Memorial Foundation also give you an assurance of quality.
Fits snugly, all the way around.
Has no obvious defects such as cracks, loose padding or frayed straps.
Three criteria: certified, snug, undamaged. No age, no date, no interval. If you are working through the checklist that runs before a ride, that is the version of the helmet check the licensing system actually asks for — and it happens to line up perfectly with Snell’s fit-based reasoning. “Fits snugly, all the way around” is precisely the thing that worn pads take away from you.
This is a pattern I keep running into. The same manual is strangely quiet about a lot of things riders expect it to teach, and where it does speak, it prefers an inspection to a schedule. The helmet chapter is the clearest example: the licensing system trusts your hands more than it trusts a date.
Three manufacturers, three different clocks
The makers all land on five, and then start their stopwatches at different moments.
Shoei states a lifetime for the product itself, in its safety instructions:
The expected lifetime of SHOEI helmets is 5 years. The helmet may not be able to provide the same performance as when new due to changes occurring during prolonged use.
and in a boxed warning:
…the helmet should be replaced within approximately five years even if it is used normally with no noticeable faults. After exceeding its expected lifetime, a helmet may not perform satisfactorily if subjected to impact.
Its warranty, though, uses a different formula entirely — a limited warranty “for a period of five (5) years from the date of purchase or seven (7) years from the date of manufacture, whichever comes first”, with the date of manufacture “found on the inside of the helmet”.
Arai does something the others do not: it names its source.
Based on the recommendations of the Snell Memorial Foundation (www.smf.org), all Arai helmets should be replaced within 5 years of first use.
Five years from first use, and the warranty covers “5 years after first purchase, but no more than 7 years from the date of manufacture”. Arai’s explanation of what ages a helmet is the most detailed of the three:
Even with minimal use, a helmet is affected by things like the acids and oils in sweat, haircare products, cleaners, polishes, pollution, exposure to UV rays, etc.
…unseen aging and deterioration of the EPS liner and fiberglass shell can affect the helmet’s ability to perform as it was originally designed in an impact.
Agv opens its answer by refusing the question:
There is no precise answer to this question. The average life of a helmet depends on a lot of factors, such as frequency of use, conditions of use (heat, cold, rain, etc.), the care and maintenance given to it, etc. Some helmet parts, such as polystyrenes and padding tend to wear after time, and lose their functionality.
and then suggests replacing the helmet at least every five years from purchase.
Line the three up and the number is identical while the clock is not: Shoei measures a product lifetime and warrants from purchase with a manufacturing-date ceiling, Arai counts from first use, Agv counts from purchase. On a helmet that sat in a warehouse for a year and in a shop for another, those three readings can be eighteen months apart. And none of them is a safety expiry date — Shoei’s and Arai’s five-and-seven are warranty terms, and Agv notes that its European legal warranty runs two years, which is nobody’s idea of how long a helmet lasts.
The lesson I take from this is not that the manufacturers are being slippery. It is that “five years” is a shorthand that compresses at least three different measurements, and if you want to apply it to your own helmet you have to know which one your maker means. It is the same thing I found when I compared what different manufacturers put in their service schedules: the intervals look interchangeable from the outside and are measured differently on the inside.
The shop shelf eats your years
This is the practical consequence almost nobody mentions, and SHARP puts it bluntly:
a helmet could have been on the shelf in a shop for two years, in which case you would need to think about replacing it within 3 years
The clock that matters — for anyone using the manufacturing date as their reference — starts in the factory, not at the till. A discounted helmet from last season’s range is a discounted helmet for a reason, and part of what you are saving on is time. That is not an argument against buying one. It is an argument for turning it over before you pay and reading the date, and for adjusting your expectation of how long it will serve.
Where is the date? FMVSS 218 requires it to be readable without removing padding or any other permanent part. SHARP describes the same information in the wild:
The date of manufacturer is marked on all new helmets sold legally in the UK… it is normally on the outside of the helmet, or on a label on the chin strap, or the date may be on a sticker inside the helmet, under the lining.
Two minutes with a torch will find it. It is the single most useful piece of information about a helmet you already own, and most riders have never looked for it.
Ride more, replace sooner: the rule everyone reads backwards
The version of the rule most riders carry around is a helmet lasts five years. The version the sources actually publish is “around five years; three years if used regularly”, and “if you wear the same helmet frequently, you should think about replacing it sooner”.
That is a sliding scale keyed to use, and it produces an awkward question: are you a frequent rider? Most people answer from a feeling. The commuter who does a short run twice a day, all year, in all weather, often thinks of themselves as riding less than the friend who does four spectacular thousand-kilometre weekends a summer — and is wrong by a factor of several. Sweat, rain, UV and the mechanical wear of pulling a helmet on and off follow the hours, not the memories. The case of the rider who under-counts their own riding is exactly where the motorcycle commuting article starts.
This is one of the few places where a riding log stops being a hobby and starts being useful. I built RideLog partly because I could never answer that question about myself. It detects rides automatically from the phone’s motion sensors and GPS, so there is no button to forget, and at the end of a year the statistics tell you what you actually did rather than what you remember doing. If the number of hours on the bike is closer to “regularly” than you assumed, the three-year end of the range is the one that applies to your helmet — and you now know that from data instead of vibes. The same app holds the maintenance reminders for the bike itself, so the helmet’s manufacturing date can sit alongside the service and insurance dates rather than in your head.
The dropped helmet: the second place the authorities contradict each other
This is the question every rider eventually asks, usually in a car park, usually with a sick feeling. The two best sources give opposite answers, using nearly the same example.
Snell:
If your helmet drops to the ground from your hand, off a seat or handle bar of a motorcycle, you do not have to replace it. In general, the real damage comes when the helmet contacts an object with a head inside.
SHARP:
A helmet that rolls off a sofa and onto a carpet is likely to be ok. A helmet that falls off the seat of your bike and hits the pavement is not likely to be ok.
…if a helmet has fallen onto a hard surface, it should be replaced as soon as possible
The helmet falling off the seat of the bike is literally the same scenario, and one source says keep it while the other says bin it. Snell does add a caveat that pulls it slightly towards SHARP — “helmets are one-use items, so treat them with care. Frequent dropping, or spiking a helmet on any hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet’s performance” — and notes that a helmet which falls to the ground at highway speeds unoccupied may well be damaged.
SHARP offers the better decision tool, which is a thought experiment rather than a rule:
Imagine it’s your bare head in each case. Your head will bounce unharmed on carpet, but you could be badly hurt by hitting your head on the pavement, even at low speed or a short height.
And it explains why looking at the helmet does not settle it:
Even if there is not a mark on the exterior of the helmet, cracks in the hard shell of the helmet may not be visible, or the padding inside could have been affected by a fall.
Snell’s practical route out of the deadlock is to get it looked at properly: without a thorough inspection by a trained professional it can be hard to tell whether a helmet has been compromised, some manufacturers offer that service, and if you suspect the helmet may be compromised, Snell recommends replacing it. Shoei says the same thing in its own words — if you have any doubts, for example if you drop your helmet or it is hit by something and you are not sure whether the one-impact rule applies, consult Shoei before using the helmet again.
Which is, I think, the honest conclusion: the drop from your hand onto tarmac sits in a genuine grey zone, and the people best placed to know disagree about it. What is not in a grey zone is the next section.
The one thing every source agrees on
An impact with your head inside it ends the helmet. There is no dissent anywhere in the eight documents.
Snell:
If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it. Even good helmets cannot provide adequate protection the second time.
with the mechanism spelled out: Snell-certified helmets are crash helmets that manage severe impact shock in only one accident, because the crushable liner absorbs the shock by collapsing itself, and a helmet damaged that way cannot protect the brain a second time.
Shoei:
In an impact, the helmet’s impact absorbing liner becomes compacted. Once this has happened, the helmet no longer has the ability to absorb further impacts. Your helmet may look the same, but it will not provide protection in an accident. Therefore, a helmet that experiences an impact should be destroyed and replaced.
And the American federal rule, in the text it forces onto the label: if the helmet experiences a severe blow, return it to the manufacturer for inspection, or destroy it and replace it.
Three sources, three continents, one instruction. A helmet that has done its job is finished, and it looks exactly like a helmet that has not.
Do not pass it on
The disposal advice from SHARP is the bluntest paragraph in any of the documents, and it is aimed squarely at the generous instinct that leads riders to give an old lid to a friend who is starting out:
It is important not to leave your helmet anywhere that it might be found and used again. Do not pass your old helmet on to a friend, family member or to anyone learning to ride. Do not sell it or give it to a charity shop. Your helmet is for you alone. There is no process for recycling helmets in the UK.
Two reasons sit underneath it. The first is everything above: you cannot see whether a helmet has been compromised, so you cannot honestly warrant it to anyone else. The second is Snell’s fit argument in reverse — a helmet with worn pads is one to two sizes larger than it was, which means it fits the next person even worse than it fits you. If you are helping someone choose their first bike and their first kit, the helmet is the line item not to economise on with a hand-me-down — and the rest of the protective kit deserves the same treatment.
Cleaning is not cosmetic, and the instructions are already inside your helmet
Here is where the two halves of this article join up, and it took reading the federal standard to see it.
FMVSS 218 requires every DOT helmet to carry this text, written by the manufacturer:
Helmet can be seriously damaged by some common substances without damage being visible to the user. Apply only the following: (Recommended cleaning agents, paints, adhesives, etc., as appropriate).
That is a legally mandated warning that household products can wreck a helmet invisibly, plus a legal requirement that the maker publish the list of what is safe. The answer to how to clean a motorcycle helmet is, for a large part, a label you already own and have probably never read.
Shoei’s version of that warning is almost the same sentence, which is not a coincidence:
Never use hot or salt water, benzene, gasoline, glass cleaner or other solvents. Your helmet can be seriously damaged by these substances without damage being visible to you. A helmet damaged or weakened by a cleaning agent may not provide head protection in an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death.
And then, unusually, it gives a recipe with quantities:
The correct way to clean a helmet is to mix 5 or 6 drops of mild soap in a quart of warm water. Dampen a soft cloth with this solution and wipe the helmet clean. Rinse with a wet cloth.
Five or six drops of mild soap in roughly a litre of warm water. That is the manufacturer’s specification for a job the market sells sprays for. Snell’s line is even shorter:
Only use mild soap water to clean the inside pads. Never use any chemical cleaning products for the inside or outside of your helmet.
Agv is the interesting case, because it makes and sells a helmet cleaner and recommends it — and then, in the same answer, tells you that soap works: if you prefer, you can simply use a sponge or a cloth soaked in warm water and a neutral soap. Its reasoning for insisting on neutral soap is the useful part:
AGV strongly recommends the use of a neutral soap as opposed to soap powders or glass cleaning products as such items often contain alcohol and/or solvents that can be abrasive and ruin the helmet.
Glass cleaner keeps appearing on every prohibited list. It is the single most common mistake, because a visor looks like a window.
For the visor specifically, Shoei is precise about what to avoid: hot water over 40 °C, salt water, acidic or alkaline detergent, benzine, gasoline, glass cleaner, or any cleaner containing organic solvents — and it warns against non-genuine stickers or commercially sold adhesive tape on the visor, because they can weaken the hard coating.
A cleaning routine that is actually a calendar
SHARP publishes the only cadence I found anywhere, and it is refreshingly small-scale.
Every day. The visor. “After every ride, wet some paper towels and leave them on your visor for a few minutes, then simply wipe off.” Softening dead flies rather than scrubbing them is the entire trick — the damage comes from the scrubbing. A scratched visor causes dazzle from oncoming headlights, and SHARP’s advice on a scratched visor is to replace it rather than live with it. That matters more than it sounds if you ride after dark or in the rain, where a hazed visor turns every set of oncoming lights into a starburst.
Every week. The vents. “Spend a few minutes each week cleaning the vents, using a toothbrush or cotton bud to ensure they’re free of obstructions.” Modern helmets are full of intakes that only work when they are open.
Every month. The removable lining and cheek pads — with a caveat SHARP is careful about: “These pads often have different washing instructions, so check the manufacturer’s guidelines before cleaning.” Agv, for its own helmets, permits the machine: removable liners can be washed by hand or in the washing machine using warm water at a maximum of 35 °C with neutral soap, air dried away from heat sources, and — the part people skip — completely dry before the helmet is used again, to prevent mould and smells.
Every six months. The whole interior, including the parts that do not come out: “Twice a year you should thoroughly clean the helmet interior, including wiping any non-removable pads with a damp cloth, before leaving to dry naturally.”
Agv adds one physical detail worth stealing: after washing, turn the helmet upside down so excess water drains out of the air vents, and let it dry at room temperature well away from any source of heat. The same logic that governs washing the bike applies here — water is fine, heat and solvents are not. It is worth saying that this is not a helmet quirk: the solvent warning turns up on chain cleaning and on brake work too, and in every case the manufacturer is more conservative than the shelf in the accessory shop.
What quietly kills a helmet years early
Every source has a list, and the lists overlap enough to be treated as one.
Heat. Shoei: do not leave the helmet in places exposed to direct sunlight or where the temperature exceeds 50 °C, such as near a heater, because the impact absorbing liner and plastic parts will be deformed, “significantly reducing the helmet’s ability to absorb shocks”. A car parked in the sun clears 50 °C easily. So does the top box on a summer afternoon. Snell adds the exhaust: do not put a helmet near high heat such as a muffler that could melt the foam liner from the inside.
The mirror and the handlebar. Snell warns against placing the helmet where a hard object such as the mirror or handlebar can damage the inner foam liner. Agv says the same thing about the rear-view mirror stem and the back of the seat. Hanging a helmet on a mirror is the single most common storage habit in motorcycling, and it presses a hard rod into the exact material that is meant to crush in an accident. SHARP’s storage advice is a helmet bag, somewhere it will not be dropped or knocked, and never stored lying on its crown or near a heat source.
Insect repellent. This one caught me completely off guard. Shoei: “The spray of insect repellent chemicals may damage the impact absorbing liner”, and elsewhere advises avoiding the spray of insect repellent chemicals such as naphthalene near the helmet. A garage that gets fogged for mosquitoes in July is a hazard nobody warns you about.
Paint and stickers. Shoei: “Paint and thinner can damage the materials used in the helmet construction”, with a helmet damaged or weakened by a paint agent possibly failing to protect the head. Agv goes further and makes it contractual — stickers must not be applied to the helmet or visor, and painting or tampering with helmet parts “will immediately invalidate the AGV product warranty”. SHARP’s take is the pragmatic middle: personalising a helmet is a job best left to professionals, who use specialist paint and adhesive so the new look does not weaken the shell.
Carrying it wrong. Shoei: do not carry the helmet by the inner lining or the shield, because it may drop and be damaged. Carry it by the chinstrap.
None of these has a number attached, which is the point. They are the reason two helmets of the same age can be in genuinely different condition, and the reason the five-year figure is a default rather than a verdict.
So how do I actually decide?
This part is mine, assembled from the sources above rather than quoted from them. When I am deciding whether a helmet stays in service, I go in this order.
- Has it taken an impact with a head inside it? If yes, it is finished. Every source agrees; there is nothing to weigh up.
- Does it still fit the way it did? This is Snell’s actual argument. Fasten the strap, then try to roll the helmet forward off the back of your head and push the brow area backwards. If it moves in a way it did not use to, the pads have gone — and worn pads make a helmet effectively one to two sizes bigger. New cheek pads can sometimes buy back a season; a shell that has lost its grip on your head cannot.
- Does it pass the licensing manual’s inspection? Cracks, loose padding, frayed straps. Add the chinstrap mechanism, the vents and the visor seals, because Agv’s pre-ride list includes checking the components subject to wear — screws, mechanisms, buttons, plastic parts, chinstrap, lining, visor. It is a two-minute job that belongs next to the other checks worth learning to do yourself.
- How old is it, and from when? Find the manufacturing date. Then decide which clock your maker uses, and be honest about whether you are a “frequently” rider. Five years is the default; three is the number for high mileage; the shop shelf comes out of your total.
- Has it been stored badly, painted, stickered, cleaned with the wrong thing, or cooked in a car? Any of these moves the estimate earlier.
Notice how little of that is about the date. Four of the five criteria are things you can check in the time it takes to make coffee, and they are more informative than the number. The calendar is the tiebreaker, not the test.
The unglamorous conclusion
The five-year rule is not a law, not a test result and not a measurement. It is a judgement call made decades ago on a sample of highway patrol helmets, adopted by manufacturers who each start counting from a slightly different moment, and passed on so many times that it now sounds like physics. The body that made the call says unused helmets do not automatically expire. The body that tests helmets for a government says nobody has independently tested the question. The federal standard that puts the sticker on your helmet requires a date of birth and never mentions a date of death.
That does not mean the rule is wrong. Foam does compress, straps do fray, sweat and UV do their work, and a helmet that no longer holds your head is genuinely worse than one that does. It means the rule is a reasonable default that deserves to be applied with your eyes open — earlier if you ride a lot or store it badly, later and with a careful inspection if it has spent its life in a bag in a cupboard.
And it means the two most useful things you can do this week cost nothing: find the date inside your helmet, and put the helmet on and check whether it still fights you a little when you try to pull it off. How long does a motorcycle helmet last?
The consensus answer is five years, but the sources are more nuanced than the number suggests. SHARP, the helmet testing programme run by the British Department for Transport, states that a helmet generally has a life of around five years, “three years if used regularly”, and reports that manufacturers recommend replacement after 3 to 5 years. Shoei states an expected lifetime of five years; Arai says five years from first use; Agv suggests at least every five years from purchase. No law in the United States or Europe sets an expiry date.
Do motorcycle helmets expire?
Not legally, and not automatically. The American federal standard for motorcycle helmets, FMVSS 218, contains the word “expire” zero times in its 3,734 words, and the only replacement instruction it requires on the label is triggered by a severe blow rather than by age. Yes, and here every source agrees. Snell: “If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it. How should I clean a motorcycle helmet?
With mild soap and water, and nothing else unless the maker says so. FMVSS 218 requires every helmet to carry the warning that it “can be seriously damaged by some common substances without damage being visible to the user”, together with the manufacturer’s list of approved cleaning agents.
