Motorcycle ABS — and the Line in the Manual That Says It Can Make You Stop Later

There is a yellow light on your dash that comes on with the key and goes out a few seconds later. That light is the motorcycle ABS reporting that it has just checked itself, and the colour and the behaviour are both written into a federal rule. Most riders know what it stands for and almost nobody has read what the people who built it wrote about it. I did, and the sentence that stopped me was not in an advert. It is in a Yamaha owner’s manual, inside a boxed warning, and it says that on some surfaces the braking distance may be longer with the ABS than without.

That is the manufacturer of the system telling you, in the document that comes in the bag under the seat, that its safety feature can lengthen your stop. Meanwhile the first page of search results treats motorcycle ABS as a straightforward upgrade that stops you sooner. Both things are on the internet. Only one of them is in the paperwork.

So I went to the paperwork: the American federal rule on motorcycle brake systems, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s own one-page briefing on ABS, the manual American states build their licensing programmes on, and two Yamaha owner’s manuals ten years apart — one from a bike that was sold in ABS and non-ABS versions, one from a bike where ABS is the floor that five other systems are built on. They line up better than I expected. What they line up on is not what the search results promise.

Mandatory nearly everywhere, optional exactly where the search happens

Start with the map, because it explains why the English-language internet is confused about this and the rest of the world is not.

The European Union settled the question more than a decade ago. Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, the framework that governs type-approval and market surveillance of two- and three-wheel vehicles and quadricycles, requires advanced braking systems on L3e motorcycles: ABS above 125 cm³, and either ABS or a combined braking system below it, at the manufacturer’s choice. The obligation took effect for new machines from 1 January 2016.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety keeps the international scoreboard, and its motorcycle page states it plainly:

All member states of the European Union as well as Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom have mandated that many types of motorcycles be equipped with ABS.

And then, about the country where most of these searches are typed:

Although there is no requirement in the U.S., the technology is widely available.

Widely, not universally. The same page counts the current model year:

Among 2025 motorcycles, 69% of models come with standard ABS, and another 17% offer it as an option.

Do the arithmetic and you get the number nobody quotes: 14% of 2025 models cannot be bought with ABS at any price, and for another 17% it is a line on the order form that a buyer can skip to save money. That is the practical difference between a mandate and availability. In Europe the question “should I get ABS” stopped existing in 2016. In the United States it is still a purchase decision, which is exactly why it is still a search.

What the American federal rule actually says — and what it carefully does not

The federal standard for motorcycle brakes is FMVSS No. 122, codified at 49 CFR § 571.122. I read the current edition end to end. The word ABS appears twenty-seven times in it, and the grammar of every one of those appearances is the same: conditional.

The warning lamp requirement reads:

Each motorcycle equipped with an ABS system shall be fitted with a yellow warning lamp.

The test section opens:

The tests are only applicable to the ABS fitted on motorcycle categories 3–1 and 3–3.

And where both circuits have it:

Where ABS is fitted to both brake systems…

That is a rule written to govern a system if the manufacturer chose to install one. It specifies the colour of the light, when it must illuminate, how it must self-check at ignition and which label it carries — the standard sends you to Table 3 of Standard No. 123 for the wording, item number 13, “ABS Malfunction”. It specifies a whole battery of tests: stops on a high-friction surface, stops on a low-friction surface, a wheel-lock check going from high grip to low grip, and one more that is worth its own sentence in a moment. What it never does is say that a motorcycle must have one.

The scope line at the top of the standard says the purpose is “to ensure safe motorcycle braking performance under normal and emergency riding conditions”. A rider could reasonably assume that a rule with that purpose, written in 2024, would require the system that the European Union, Japan, Brazil, India and Australia all decided was worth mandating. It does not, and reading it is the clearest way to understand that ABS on an American motorcycle is a feature, not a floor.

The price of the missing mandate, in two numbers

The case for the mandate is not rhetorical. It has been measured twice, in two different currencies.

Fatalities first. The IIHS cites work by Teoh:

The rate of fatal crashes is 22% lower for motorcycles equipped with optional ABS than for those same models without ABS.

The phrase that carries the weight there is those same models. This is not sport bikes compared against tourers; it is the ABS version of a machine compared against the non-ABS version of the same machine, which removes most of the obvious confounders — although not the rider, since the person who ticks the ABS box on the order form may also be the person who rides differently.

Then money, which insurers count without any interest in the argument. The Highway Loss Data Institute reported in 2025:

Collision insurance claims for motorcycles with ABS are filed 25% less frequently than for motorcycles without it — 28% when the ABS bikes have combined brake controls.

Two independent measurements — one from crash records, one from claims — pointing the same way. Note the third figure carefully, because it is a different thing again: 28% applies to ABS bikes that also have combined or linked brake controls, where one control applies pressure to both wheels. That is a separate technology stacked on top, not a better grade of ABS.

The sentence the whole first page of results gets backwards

Here is where the primary sources start disagreeing with the internet.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation publishes a one-page briefing called Quick Tips: Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS). It contains this:

ABS is not intended to shorten stopping distances on dry roads, so riders are not free to speed or tailgate in hopes that ABS will compensate for their poor judgment.

Read it twice. The organisation that trains American riders says that shortening your stop on a dry road is not what the system is for. Its purpose is to keep the wheels turning so that the tyres keep gripping and the bike stays upright and steerable while you brake hard. Stopping sooner is sometimes a by-product, particularly on a wet or contaminated surface. It is not the design goal, and treating it as one is how the extra safety gets spent instead of banked.

The same page states where the benefit really lives:

ABS can quickly respond to a change in surface friction during braking and help prevent the rider from losing control. ABS’s greatest benefit may be on wet or icy roads.

Which is a good reason to read this alongside what changes when the road is wet — the conditions where the system earns its money are exactly the ones where you are least able to test it deliberately.

And then the line that ends the argument, in nine words:

ABS does not allow a motorcycle to violate the laws of physics.

Gravel: the case where the manufacturer says it stops you later

The MSF states the general principle. Yamaha states the specific exception, and it does so inside a boxed warning in the MT-07 owner’s manual — the section headed ABS (for ABS models):

Always keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle ahead to match the riding speed even with ABS.

Three claims, all from the company that fitted the system.

The first kills the tailgating logic before it starts: having ABS does not shorten the gap you should leave.

The second is genuinely counter-intuitive. The ABS performs best with long braking distances — it needs distance and time to do its cycling. A short, violent grab is where it has least to work with.

The third is the one that ought to be in every article on the subject and is in almost none. On loose surfaces a locked wheel ploughs into the gravel and builds a wedge of material in front of the tyre, and that wedge is a genuinely effective decelerator — ugly, uncontrollable, but short. ABS refuses to let the wheel lock, so the wedge never forms. You keep steering and stability; you may give up metres. Yamaha does not explain the mechanism, so take the physics as my reading and the outcome as the manufacturer’s: on rough or gravel roads, the stop may be longer with the system than without it.

If your riding includes unpaved sections, that is not a reason to want a bike without ABS. It is a reason to know that the machine will behave differently there from how it behaves on tarmac, and that the difference is documented rather than folklore.

The system is designed for a motorcycle that is standing up

This is the single most useful thing I found, and it is stated so plainly that it is easy to skim past.

The current Yamaha XSR900 GP has a menu item called BC, brake control system. Setting it to OFF gives you, in the manual’s own words:

Only the standard ABS (anti-lock brake system), which adjusts brake pressure based on vehicle speed and wheel speed data. The standard ABS (anti-lock brake system) designed to engage and maximize braking when the vehicle is upright.

When the vehicle is upright. Standard ABS reads two things — how fast the bike is going and how fast each wheel is turning — and it makes its decisions with no idea how far over you are leaned. That is not a defect. It is the specification.

The MSF says the same thing from the rider’s side, and adds the consequence:

ABS is most effective when the bike is completely upright and going in a straight line.

The dynamics of motorcycles, which must lean to corner, prevents the ABS from assisting the rider in every situation.

During aggressive cornering, ABS may not have the intended effect. Cornering at the limit requires very smooth braking, and the pulsing caused by ABS can upset the bike, causing it to “low-side” and slide out from under the rider.

So in the situation riders most fantasise about being saved from — too fast into a corner, panic, grab — the system is at its weakest, and its characteristic pulsing is itself a disturbance the chassis has to absorb mid-lean. Which is why the order of operations taught in every riding manual, and which I went through when I read the official manuals on riding technique, is still the answer: get the bike as upright as conditions allow, then brake. ABS does not replace that sequence. It gives you a margin for the part you get wrong — and the cheapest way to need that margin less often is still to see the hazard earlier, which is what defensive riding is for.

Cornering ABS exists, it is a separate system, and it carries its own warning

The obvious objection is that modern bikes have cornering ABS. They do — and reading how a manufacturer describes it is instructive, because it is nothing like the marketing.

On the XSR900 GP, cornering assistance is the ON position of that same BC setting: it “suppresses the increase in brake pressure when unavoidable abrupt braking occurs during cornering, making the vehicle’s recovery to upright position more gradual”, using extra data from an inertial measurement unit to regulate brake power according to lean angle.

Note what is being promised: a more gradual recovery to upright during an unavoidable abrupt brake application. Not permission to brake hard mid-corner. The manual removes the ambiguity itself:

Even with BC ON, strong braking during cornering may result in wheel slippage and loss of balance. Please decelerate sufficiently before entering corners.

And then a restriction I did not expect:

Do not use BC on roads other than public roads, as BC may not operate properly and an accident may result.

The system built for braking in a lean is declared unsuitable for the one place where people brake in a lean on purpose. There is a further note for the same audience: “for skilled riders or when track riding, a variety of conditions may cause BC to brake faster than expected for a desired cornering speed or intended cornering line” — the electronics can slow you more than you asked for, which on a track is its own hazard.

Cornering ABS is a real advance and it is worth having. It is also an on/off menu item with a warning attached, not a licence.

The reflex that switches it off

If you learned to drive before ABS was universal in cars, you were taught to pump the brakes to avoid a skid. That instruction is now actively harmful, and all three of my sources say so independently.

Yamaha:

If the ABS is activated, a pulsating sensation may be felt at the brake lever or brake pedal. In this situation, continue to apply the brakes and let the ABS work; do not “pump” the brakes as this will reduce braking effectiveness.

MSF Quick Tips:

ABS only works when the front brake lever and rear brake pedal are continuously applied during stopping, and not “pumped.”

And the Motorcycle Operator Manual, the book American states use for licensing, describing the mechanism:

brake pressure is released then reapplied to maintain maximum braking effectiveness if the brake controls remain applied.

If the brake controls remain applied. The pulsing you feel is not the system struggling, and it is not a fault — it is the ABS doing its job at a rate the same manual quantifies: it “is capable of releasing and reapplying pressure more than 15 times per second“. Fifteen times a second is far faster than any human foot or hand. The moment you flinch off the lever because it feels wrong, you take that back and do the modulating yourself, badly.

This is worth rehearsing mentally, because it cannot be rehearsed physically without an empty surface and a plan. The instruction is short: when it pulses, keep squeezing.

The click at 6 mph is the system checking itself

A related piece of folklore is the noise. From the MT-07 manual:

The ABS performs a self-diagnosis test each time the vehicle first starts off after the key is turned to “ON” and the vehicle has traveled at a speed of 10 km/h (6 mi/h) or higher. During this test, a “clicking” noise can be heard from the hydraulic control unit, and if the brake lever or brake pedal is even slightly applied, a vibration can be felt at the lever and pedal, but these do not indicate a malfunction.

That threshold — 10 km/h, roughly 6 mph — is Yamaha’s figure for that model; other manufacturers set their own. What generalises is the behaviour: a click from under the tank and a faint kick through the controls as you pull out of the drive is the hydraulic unit proving to itself that it still works. It is one of the few components on a motorcycle that tests itself every single time you ride, and riders regularly take it to a workshop as a fault.

Which brings me to the strangest thing in the whole file.

You cannot try your own ABS

Same manual, next paragraph:

This ABS has a test mode which allows the owner to experience the pulsation at the brake lever or brake pedal when the ABS is operating. However, special tools are required, so please consult your Yamaha dealer.

There is a test mode. It exists precisely so that an owner can feel what the system does before meeting it for real. And it is locked behind tooling you do not have.

Think about what that means for the emergency you are supposed to be prepared for. Every other control on a motorcycle can be explored at low risk: you can find the bite point of the clutch in a car park, learn how much travel the brake lever has, feel where the tyres start protesting. The one system whose entire purpose is to intervene at the worst moment of your riding life is the one you will most likely meet for the first time during that moment. Unless you deliberately create a safe rehearsal — an empty, clean, level surface and a hard straight-line stop — the pulsing will be a new sensation exactly when a new sensation is least welcome.

That rehearsal, done sensibly, is probably the highest-value thirty minutes available to an ABS-equipped rider, and no manual will schedule it for you.

If it fails, the brakes stay — and the rule makes sure of it

The reassuring part. From Yamaha:

The ABS is monitored by an ECU, which will revert the system to conventional braking if a malfunction occurs.

And in the warning about the dash light: if it comes on or flashes while riding, “the brake system reverts to conventional braking”. The MSF says the same: “If the ABS system fails, an indicator light will come on, and the brakes will still work, but without the ABS function.”

The interesting part is that this is not left to goodwill. FMVSS 122 includes a test section titled Stops with an ABS electrical failure, conducted “with the ABS electrical system disabled”. So the American rule that declines to require ABS does require that, once fitted and then broken, the motorcycle still stops to standard.

Which reframes that yellow light. It does not mean the brakes have gone. It means you are now riding a motorcycle without ABS — the same machine that 14% of 2025 models are, permanently — and the front lever now needs the progressive squeeze that the pre-ride checks and the riding manuals describe, with no electronic backstop behind it. Get it looked at, and until you do, ride the bike you actually have.

The cost of ABS that nobody puts in the review

Here is the one I have never seen written down, and it took reading a whole manual to find.

The MT-07 owner’s manual has a chapter called Front wheel (for non-ABS models) and another called Rear wheel (for non-ABS models). Both are step-by-step removal and installation procedures. At the top of the first one sits this warning:

For the ABS model, have a Yamaha dealer remove and install the wheel.

Same bike. Same model year. Same showroom. The buyer who chose the version without ABS gets the procedure for taking the wheel off in his handbook. The buyer who chose the version with it gets the address of a dealership.

That is a real, recurring cost — every tyre change, every wheel bearing job, every trip to have a puncture repaired properly — and it never appears in a comparison of the two versions, which usually stops at the purchase price. It does not change my view that ABS is worth having; the 22% figure settles that. But it does mean the true comparison includes a line item that the brochure leaves out, and it is one more reason to keep an honest record of what each bike actually costs you to run rather than what you assumed it would.

If you do your own work, this is worth checking in your own manual before you plan a job. The basic operations most riders can do themselves are not identical across two versions of the same motorcycle, and the wheel is the clearest case.

Ten years: from a variant to the foundations

Reading the 2014 manual next to the current one shows how fast this went.

I counted the phrases in the full text of both. The MT-07 manual from October 2014 says “for ABS models” five times and “for non-ABS models” four times: the document is forked, because the motorcycle was sold both ways. The phrase “traction control” appears in it zero times.

The XSR900 GP manual, ten years later on the 890 platform, contains no occurrences of “non-ABS” at all. It says “standard ABS” six times — standard, as in the baseline everything else assumes — and “TCS” twenty-four times. On top of that baseline sit five acronyms: TCS for traction, SCS for slides, LIF for front-wheel lift, BSR for slip while decelerating and downshifting, and BC for braking in a lean. All of them read the same wheel speed sensors that ABS put on the bike in the first place, plus an inertial measurement unit that knows which way the motorcycle is pointing.

In ten years ABS went from a variant of the model to the floor of the electronics. And through all of it the disclaimer did not soften. The warning at the head of the Yamaha Ride Control section still says the system

is not a substitute for the use of proper riding techniques or the expertise of the operator

and still lists what it cannot do — it cannot prevent front wheel slip or front wheel lift, and “as with any motorcycle, always ride within your limits”. Five new systems, same sentence.

What the licensing manual says about all this: almost nothing

Last finding, and it is the one that explains why this article needed writing.

The Motorcycle Operator Manual is the book American states build their rider licensing on. It runs to more than twenty thousand words. The abbreviation ABS appears in it four times, all inside one sidebar of about ninety words, sitting next to a similar box on linked and integrated braking systems.

That box explains what ABS does and how fast it cycles. It does not tell a new rider to prefer a motorcycle that has it, does not mention that most of the developed world requires it, and does not repeat the cornering caveat that the same organisation puts in its own Quick Tips sheet. It closes by sending you elsewhere:

Consult the owner’s manual for a detailed explanation on the operation and effective use of these systems.

So the document a new American rider studies devotes ninety words to the technology, and points at the manual in the bag under the seat — which, as it turns out, is where the useful sentences actually live. That is a fair division of labour. It is also why so few riders have read them.

Where the record helps

I write this blog alongside RideLog, an app I built to keep the history of what a motorcycle has actually had done to it. Rides record themselves — it starts on movement, with no button to press — and maintenance reminders sit next to them, which is the part that matters here.

Two of the findings above are calendar items, not mileage items. On a bike with a hydraulic clutch or brakes, the fluid work runs on a two-year clock regardless of how far you ride, which is the same trap I ran into when I read what the manuals say about bleeding the brakes and about the clutch — and the reason I ended up comparing what the factory schedules actually ask for in the first place. And the dealer-only wheel removal on an ABS bike is a recurring cost that only becomes visible if someone is writing it down — one that quietly changes what a tyre change is worth to you, which is a different conversation from the one about choosing the tyres.

What the app does not do is any of the things this article is about. It has no idea whether your bike has ABS, it cannot test it, and no app can. What I would tell someone shopping for a bike this week

Buy the ABS. The 22% lower fatal crash rate on the same models, and a quarter fewer collision claims, are not marginal effects, and in most of the world the decision was taken out of buyers’ hands a decade ago for exactly that reason. If it is your first motorcycle, treat it as non-negotiable rather than as a trim level.

Then ride as though you had not bought it. Leave the gap the manual asks for even with ABS. Get the motorcycle upright before you brake hard, because standard ABS is specified for a bike that is standing up. Keep squeezing when the lever pulses. Expect a longer stop on gravel, not a shorter one. Treat the yellow light as a change in the machine you are riding rather than a workshop appointment you can postpone. And find a safe, empty surface and make the system work once on purpose, since the manufacturer has locked the only other way of finding out how it feels.

None of that is a reason to distrust the technology. It is what the people who built it, tested it and regulate it wrote down — and, read together, it says the same thing the MSF put in nine words: ABS does not let a motorcycle violate the laws of physics. It just buys you back the mistakes you make inside them.

Does ABS shorten a motorcycle’s stopping distance?

Not as a design goal. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation states that ABS “is not intended to shorten stopping distances on dry roads”, and that riders “are not free to speed or tailgate in hopes that ABS will compensate for their poor judgment”. A locked wheel builds a wedge of loose material in front of the tyre that slows the bike quickly but with no steering or stability; ABS will not allow that, so you keep control and may give up distance.

Is motorcycle ABS required by law?

It depends entirely on where the motorcycle is sold. The IIHS states that “there is no requirement in the U.S.”, while all EU member states plus Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom mandate it for many types of motorcycle. In Europe the requirement comes from Regulation (EU) No 168/2013 on the type-approval of two- and three-wheel vehicles, which requires ABS above 125 cm³ from 1 January 2016. The American federal standard on motorcycle brakes, FMVSS 122, regulates ABS only where it is fitted.

How many motorcycles come with ABS?

Does ABS work when I am leaned over in a corner?

Standard ABS is specified for an upright motorcycle. Yamaha describes the standard system as “designed to engage and maximize braking when the vehicle is upright”, working from vehicle speed and wheel speed data alone, and the MSF warns that during aggressive cornering “the pulsing caused by ABS can upset the bike, causing it to ‘low-side'”. Cornering ABS is a separate, additional system that uses an inertial measurement unit to take lean angle into account — and even then Yamaha’s warning reads “even with BC ON, strong braking during cornering may result in wheel slippage and loss of balance”.

Should I pump the brakes on a bike with ABS?

No. Yamaha’s instruction is to “continue to apply the brakes and let the ABS work; do not ‘pump’ the brakes as this will reduce braking effectiveness”, and the MSF says ABS “only works when the front brake lever and rear brake pedal are continuously applied during stopping, and not ‘pumped'”. The system releases and reapplies pressure more than fifteen times per second, which is far beyond anything a rider can do manually. The pulsing in the lever is the system working, not failing.

Why does my ABS click when I pull away?

On the MT-07, Yamaha explains that the system runs a self-diagnosis test the first time the bike moves off after the key is turned on and speed reaches 10 km/h (6 mi/h), during which a clicking noise comes from the hydraulic control unit and a vibration can be felt if the brake is even lightly applied — and that “these do not indicate a malfunction”. The threshold is that model’s figure, but the behaviour is common: it is the unit testing itself, once per ride.

What happens if the ABS warning light comes on while riding?

The brakes keep working without the ABS function. Yamaha states that the ECU “will revert the system to conventional braking if a malfunction occurs”, and the MSF says the same. FMVSS 122 even includes a test called “stops with an ABS electrical failure”, carried out with the ABS electrical system disabled, so a motorcycle whose ABS has failed must still stop to standard. Treat the light as notice that you are now riding a bike without ABS, and have it checked.

Can I test my own ABS?

Not the way the factory can. Yamaha notes that its ABS has a test mode letting the owner feel the pulsation, “however, special tools are required, so please consult your Yamaha dealer”.
