Every guide that explains how to ride a motorcycle counts to something. Seven steps, eleven steps, thirteen beginner-friendly steps. The booklet that American licensing programmes are actually built on counts to nothing, and opens its riding chapter with a grey box that says reading it will not teach you the physical skills to control direction, speed or balance.
That box is the most useful thing on the internet about learning to ride, and it is on page 10 of a free PDF almost nobody opens.
So I read the sources instead of the guides: the 58-page manual American states hand to riders sitting the licence exam, two factory owner’s manuals from the same manufacturer, and the federal crash statistics that describe what actually happens to people in their first months on a bike. They agree on the mechanics. They disagree — sometimes flatly — on what you should do at a red light, when to change gear, and whether a number even exists for the thing you are being told to feel.
The manual that admits it cannot teach you
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Motorcycle Operator Manual is the document most American states hand to learner riders, and the knowledge test questions are drawn from it. Its chapter on riding, titled “Ride Within Your Abilities”, does not begin with a step. It begins with a disclaimer printed in a grey box, and the second sentence is the one to keep:
“That’s something you can learn only through practice, preferably in a formal course of instruction like an MSF RiderCourse.”
The sentence before it says that reading the manual does not teach you the physical skills to control direction, speed or balance. The organisation that writes the exam is telling you, on the page where the riding starts, that the reading is the easy half.
It repeats the point in the chapter about earning the licence, and there it gets blunter:
“Assessing your own skills is not enough. People often overestimate their own abilities.”
So the honest answer to how to ride a motorcycle comes in two halves, and only one of them fits on a page. None of this makes an article useless. It changes what an article is for. What follows is not a substitute for saddle time — it is the set of decisions that a learner usually gets wrong for months because nobody names them out loud. The controls are learned by hand. The reasoning behind them is learned by reading, and it is quick.
Where the hands and feet go, and the detail that stops the throttle snatching
The manual’s list on body position runs through posture, seat, hands, knees, feet. Four of the five are what you would expect: sit far enough forward that the arms are slightly bent, keep the knees against the tank, keep the feet firmly on the footrests without letting the toes point down, where they “may get caught between the road and the footrests”.
The fifth is the one worth memorising, because it fixes the single most visible beginner symptom — the bike that lurches every time the rider is startled:
“Start with your right wrist flat. This will help you keep from accidentally using too much throttle.”
A wrist cocked above the grip has nowhere to go under braking or over a bump except into the throttle. Flat, it does not. It is a one-second adjustment that removes an entire class of mistake, and it costs nothing to make it a habit on the first day.
The manual pairs it with something equally cheap: adjust the bars so the hands sit level with or below the elbows, which is what lets you press on a grip rather than pull on it. That matters more than it sounds, for reasons that show up in the section on turning.
Shifting: three steps, and a neutral hiding between the two gears you use most
The gear pattern is described plainly: one down, then neutral, then the rest going up. “A typical gear pattern is 1-N-2-3-4-5. The N is for neutral, which is selected by either a ‘half lift’ from 1st gear or a ‘half press’ from 2nd gear.”
Read that once more, because it explains the noise every learner makes in the first week. Neutral does not sit at the bottom or the top of the pattern. It sits between the two gears you use most in traffic, and it is found with a deliberately incomplete movement — exactly the movement a nervous foot makes.
The factory manuals know it too. In the Yamaha procedure for starting off, seven steps long, only one carries a warning in brackets, and it is step five:
“Shift the transmission into second gear. (Make sure not to shift the transmission into the neutral position.)”
The fix is mechanical, not delicate. The licensing manual gives the movement as one firm action: “position your foot under the shift lever and lift and release”, and “the shift lever changes one gear each time it is lifted or pressed down”. Half-hearted lifts find neutral. Full ones do not.
Both manuals then describe the same three-step rhythm, which is worth learning as a rhythm rather than as three separate things:
- Upshift — roll off the throttle as you squeeze the clutch lever; lift the shift lever firmly as far as it will go and release; smoothly ease out the clutch lever and adjust the throttle.
- Downshift — roll off the throttle as you squeeze the clutch; press the shift lever down firmly and release; ease out the clutch lever as you roll on the throttle.
That last half-step is the one beginners skip. Rolling the throttle on slightly while easing the clutch out on a downshift, in the manual’s words, “can help the engine come up to speed more quickly and make the downshift smoother”. Skip it and the bike nods; do it and it does not. Yamaha frames the same physics as a warning rather than a technique: engaging a lower gear when the vehicle or engine speed is too high “could make the rear wheel lose traction or the engine to over-rev”.
The shift point is a number on one bike and a feeling on another
Here the sources stop agreeing, and the disagreement is instructive.
The licensing manual refuses to give a number at all:
“Shift up well before the engine RPM reaches its maximum recommended speed. As a general rule, shift up soon enough to avoid over-revving the engine, but not so soon to cause the engine to lug.”
The owner’s manual of a Yamaha MT-07 does the opposite. It prints a table titled “Recommended shift points”, and the table is in kilometres per hour, not revs:

And the MT-09, the same manufacturer’s larger triple, has no such table anywhere in the book. Its deceleration procedure says only “as the vehicle decelerates, shift to a lower gear”, and its acceleration procedure names second gear without naming a speed.
Three documents, three different units for one decision: road speed, engine feel, or nothing at all. Which means the honest instruction is not “shift at 5,000 rpm”, the number the internet repeats. It is: open your own manual and find out whether your bike has a table. If it does, those speeds are unusually easy to learn, because a speedometer is easier to read than an engine. If it does not, the manual is telling you that the sound is the instrument.
One number that does transfer, from Yamaha’s fuel-consumption advice: “shift up swiftly, and avoid high engine speeds during acceleration”, and do not blip and rev while shifting down with no load on the engine. Riding gently in a high gear is the same skill as riding economically, which is convenient while there is already plenty to think about.
The front brake is “at least 70 percent”, and it is an exam question
Most of what a new rider is nervous about is the front brake, and most of what goes wrong is the opposite of what they fear. The manual states the split:
“The front brake is more powerful and can provide 70% or more of your total stopping power. The front brake is safe to use if you use it properly.”
This is not a stylistic opinion buried in a chapter. It is sample question 2 of the knowledge test at the back of the same booklet — “The FRONT brake supplies how much of the potential stopping power?” — and the correct answer in the key is at least 70%. A learner can fail a licence exam for believing the folklore about the front brake being the dangerous one.
The evidence on what riders actually do is one line long, and it is the line to remember:
“Studies show that most crash-involved riders: Underbrake the front tire and overbrake the rear.”
The instruction, on both the licensing side and the factory side, is the same and is not negotiable. The manual: “Always use both brakes every time you slow or stop.” Yamaha, in a boxed warning: “Improper braking can cause loss of control or traction. Always use both brakes and apply them smoothly.”
The method for a hard stop is described as a sequence of pressure rather than an event. Squeeze the front lever “smoothly, firmly and with progressively more force” — do not grab it or use abrupt pressure. As weight transfers forward, more traction becomes available at the front, so the front can be applied harder after braking has begun. Light-to-lighter pressure on the rear, because the back of the bike is unloading as the front loads. Knees against the tank, eyes up and well ahead, which is what keeps the stop in a straight line.
What to do when a wheel locks, which is not what instinct says
Two different answers for two different wheels, and both are counter-intuitive enough to be worth reading twice.
Front wheel locks: “release the front brake lever immediately then reapply it firmly”. Release, then reapply — not release and give up on it.
Rear wheel locks, on a surface with decent grip: “you can keep it locked until you have completely stopped; even with a locked rear wheel, you can control the motorcycle if it is upright and going in a straight line.” Grabbing back a locked rear that has already stepped out of line is how a low-side becomes a high-side.
If the bike has ABS, the manual describes what the system is doing rather than telling you to trust it blindly: it releases and reapplies pressure “more than 15 times per second” when sensors detect a possible lock, and it only works if the brake controls remain applied. The reflex ABS punishes is the one where you feel the pulsing and let go.
Braking in a corner has its own rule, and it is a rule of order rather than force: if you must stop quickly while leaned over, “first straighten and square the handlebars, then stop”. When that is not possible — a left-hander with a drop on the outside, a right-hander with oncoming traffic — brake smoothly and gradually, reducing lean as speed falls and increasing brake pressure as traction returns. And always straighten the bars in the last few feet, or the bike falls over at walking pace in front of everybody.
Turning: press right, go right — and the exception that reverses your body
The manual teaches turning as four words in order: SLOW, LOOK, PRESS, ROLL.
- Slow — reduce speed before the turn by closing the throttle and, if necessary, using both brakes.
- Look — look through the turn to where you want to go, turning “just your head, not your shoulders”, and keeping your eyes level with the horizon.
- Press — “To lean the motorcycle, press on the handgrip in the direction of the turn. Press left handgrip — lean left — go left. Press right handgrip — lean right — go right.”
- Roll — roll on the throttle to maintain or slightly increase speed, which settles the bike.
That third step is countersteering, and the manual never uses the word. Not once in 58 pages. It teaches the input and skips the physics lecture, which is the right call for a learner: at road speed, pressing the right grip is what makes the bike go right, and arguing with the explanation does not change the handlebar.
It does appear on the exam in disguise. Sample question 3 asks how to swerve correctly, and the correct answer is “press the handgrip in the direction of the turn” — not the opposite one, which is offered as the trap.
Then comes the exception that catches out riders who have learned the rule too well:
“In regular turns, the rider and the motorcycle should lean together at the same angle. In slow, tight turns, counterbalance by leaning the motorcycle only and keeping your body upright.”
At speed, rider and machine lean together. In a car park U-turn, the bike leans and you do not — you stay upright and let it fall away underneath you. The same instruction reappears in the swerving section: “keep your body upright and allow the motorcycle to lean in the direction of the turn… let the motorcycle move underneath you.” Riders who cannot do slow U-turns are almost always leaning with the bike, exactly as they were taught to at 50 mph.
Where to look: two seconds, four seconds, twelve seconds
Ask the internet what the “12 second rule” is and you will get a dozen half-answers. The manual gives three lead times, and they do different jobs:
- Two seconds is the minimum following distance behind the vehicle ahead, measured by picking a marker and counting “one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two” from when the vehicle ahead passes it. Reach the marker before “two” and you are too close.
- Four seconds is the urgent path. “Anything that is within 4 seconds of your path is considered immediate because 4 seconds can provide enough time and space to swerve and/or brake.”
- Twelve seconds is the search horizon: look ahead to an area it would take about twelve seconds to reach, “to prepare for a situation before it becomes urgent”.
Two seconds is a floor, not a target. The manual says to open it to “a three-second or more following distance” if the pavement is slippery, if you cannot see through the vehicle ahead, or if traffic is heavy enough that somebody may squeeze in. Every one of those conditions is normal on an ordinary commute.
The three numbers are also the practical answer to target fixation, which is the failure mode nobody warns beginners about until it happens: the bike goes where the eyes go, so a rider staring at the pothole hits the pothole. “Look through the turn to where you want to go” and “make your escape path the target of your vision” are the same instruction stated twice, and neither is about the pothole. The exam answer about eye contact is the one everybody gets wrong
Sample question 5 shows a car waiting to enter an intersection ahead of you. The offered answers include “make eye contact with the driver”. The correct answer is “reduce speed and be ready to react”.
The chapter behind that question is unusually direct for an official publication:
“There are no guarantees that others see you. Never count on ‘eye contact.’ Too often, a driver looks right at a motorcyclist and still fails to ‘see’ him or her. The only eyes that you can count on are your own. If a car can enter your path, assume that it will.”
Eye contact is the single most repeated piece of advice given to new riders by other riders, and the licensing manual treats it as a wrong answer. Not a weak one — a wrong one, in the key at the back of the book.
The related habit worth building early is the one the same booklet uses for signalling in groups, where hand signals still do a job the indicators cannot; if you are going to ride with other people, the complete set of motorcycle hand signals is a shorter read than it looks, and only three of them are law.
At the red light, the two manuals disagree
Here is the cleanest contradiction in the whole stack of documents, and it happens at the most ordinary moment in riding.
The licensing manual:
“Remain in first gear while you are stopped so that you can move out quickly if you need to.”
The Yamaha owner’s manual, final step of its official deceleration procedure, identical in both models:
“Once the motorcycle has stopped, the transmission can be shifted into the neutral position. The neutral indicator light should come on and then the clutch lever can be released.”
Both are defensible, and they are optimising for different things. The manufacturer’s procedure ends with the clutch released, which is easier on your left hand in traffic and on the clutch itself. The safety organisation wants the bike able to move the instant something appears in the mirror, because a stopped motorcycle at a light is a small object in front of a driver who is looking at a phone.
Note the wording: Yamaha says the transmission can be shifted into neutral, not that it must be. That is permission, not instruction. In practice the compromise most riders converge on is first gear with the clutch in while anything is still approaching from behind, neutral once the queue behind is stationary and there is a car between you and the traffic — which is a decision, not a habit, and knowing that both manuals exist is what turns it into one.
The number that should shape your first months
Two statistics, from two different official sources, describe the risk profile of a new rider better than any amount of advice.
The first is from the licensing manual, and it is not about beginners in the way it is usually quoted:
“More than half of all crashes involve riders with less than five months of experience on their motorcycle.”
The phrase is “on their motorcycle”, and the paragraph sits inside a section about riding an unfamiliar bike. The same page says: “No matter how experienced you may be, ride extra carefully on any motorcycle that’s new or unfamiliar to you.” So the clock resets when the bike changes. Twenty years of riding and a machine collected from the dealer yesterday puts you inside that statistic, which is a genuinely uncomfortable thought for anybody who has just upgraded.
The second is from the American federal crash data. In its 2023 motorcycle fact sheet, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports:
“Thirty-four percent of motorcycle riders in fatal traffic crashes in 2023 were riding without valid motorcycle licenses at the time of the crashes, while only 15 percent of passenger vehicle (passenger cars and light trucks) drivers in fatal crashes did not have valid licenses.”
Two points of care with that figure. It measures licence status, not competence — plenty of unlicensed riders can ride, and the number does not prove that the missing licence caused anything. And it is a share of people who died, not a risk calculated per mile. What it does say, unambiguously, is that riding without the endorsement is more than twice as common among motorcyclists killed as driving unlicensed is among car drivers killed, in a year when 6,335 motorcyclists died in the United States.
Put the two together and the practical reading is simple. The formal route through a training course and a licence is not bureaucratic theatre, and the risky window is the first months on this bike, not the first months of your life.
The constraint no riding guide mentions: your engine is also new
If the motorcycle is new, there is a second rulebook running in parallel, and it belongs to the manufacturer rather than the safety organisation. Yamaha puts it in a sentence with no hedging:
“There is never a more important period in the life of your engine than the period between 0 and 1600 km (1000 mi).”
On the MT-07 the limits are: avoid prolonged operation above 5,000 rpm for the first 1,000 km, then above 6,000 rpm to 1,600 km, after which the bike “can now be operated normally”. On the MT-09 the same two lines read 5,300 rpm and 6,300 rpm. Same manufacturer, same showroom, different numbers — so this is another figure to read off your own book rather than off a forum.
There is one more line worth taping to the garage wall, and it applies for the entire life of the bike, not just the first thousand miles: “For maximum engine life, never accelerate hard when the engine is cold!”
A new rider on a new bike is therefore under two sets of constraints at once, and they happen to point the same way: gentle throttle, early upshifts, no sustained revs. The riding that protects the engine is also the riding that keeps a learner inside their own limits. That is a coincidence, but a convenient one.
Ten minutes before you ride, every time
The manual’s pre-ride routine has a name, T-CLOCS, and the instruction is that it “should be conducted before every ride”. The letters stand for Tires and wheels, Controls, Lights and electrics, Oil and other fluids, Chassis, Stands.
The parts of it that matter most to somebody still learning are the ones that would change how the bike behaves under them:
- Controls — the throttle “should snap back to fully closed when released”; the clutch should feel tight and operate smoothly.
- Brakes — try the front and rear controls one at a time, and make sure each “feels firm and holds the motorcycle when fully applied”.
- Tires — inflation pressure, tread wear and the general condition of the sidewalls.
- Chassis — chain or belt adjusted to the manufacturer’s specification, sprockets checked for wear.

Two of the jobs in that schedule show up disproportionately in the first year of ownership: the chain, because it is the only item with an event trigger rather than a mileage, and the brakes, because the fluid ages on a calendar whether the bike moves or not.
There is one more instruction in the same chapter, for the day somebody hands you the keys to a bike that is not yours: “Find out where everything is, particularly the turn signals, horn, headlight switch, fuel-supply valve and engine cut-off switch. Find and operate these items without having to look for them.” Then, specifically for a manual gearbox: “Be very familiar with the friction zone.”
Where to actually practise, and what to practise
The manual is explicit that the physical skills come from practice, and the licence test is where they get measured. Most American states require a knowledge test and an on-cycle skill test, and the skill test checks the things this article has been circling: the ability to “accelerate, brake and turn safely”, to “stop, turn and swerve quickly”, and to complete “normal and quick stops” and “normal and quick turns or swerves”.
Which means the practice list is not a mystery. In an empty, legal, flat space, with gear on:
- Friction zone at walking pace — clutch out to the bite, throttle steady, no feet down. This is the single skill that unlocks everything slow.
- Straight-line stops from a fixed marker, both brakes, progressively harder each time. The goal is smoothness first and distance second.
- U-turns inside a marked box, bike leaning, body upright, eyes up and around the turn rather than down at the front wheel.
- Upshift and downshift without looking at the lever, until finding second no longer requires attention.
- Emergency stops from a slightly higher speed, once the first four are boring.
Every one of those is on the exam in some form, and every one is a thing you cannot learn from a screen. Add a course, and the difference is that somebody watches you do them and tells you what your hands are actually doing, which is not the same as what you think they are doing — the manual’s line about overestimating your own abilities applies to me as much as to anybody.
When the fundamentals stop taking attention, the next things to read are the ones about conditions rather than controls: riding in the rain, riding at night, and the first ride of a new season after months off, which has its own rust to shake off. Before any of that, the gear: how to choose a jacket, gloves and protection is a decision made once and lived with for years. And if the bike itself is not chosen yet, choosing a first motorcycle comes before all of it.
Practice you can count
The one measurable thing in this entire article is the five-month figure, and what it measures is time on a specific motorcycle. Not confidence, not courses attended, not how many videos got watched. Saddle time on that bike.
That is awkward, because saddle time is the thing riders are worst at estimating. Ask somebody how much they rode in their first three months and the answer will be a shrug and a guess, usually generous.

- It is not a substitute for a course, and after reading the source material for this article I would put that more strongly than I would have before writing it.
- Distances come from the phone’s GPS, not from your odometer — accurate enough to compare one month against another, not a legal odometer reading.

The statistic that puts a number on it is that more than half of all crashes involve riders with less than five months of experience on their motorcycle, and that clock restarts every time the bike changes, no matter how long you have been riding.
Which brake should you use on a motorcycle?
Both, every time. The manual is categorical — “always use both brakes every time you slow or stop” — and Yamaha prints the same instruction as a boxed warning in its owner’s manuals. The front brake supplies “70% or more” of the total stopping power, and that figure is a sample question on the knowledge test, with “at least 70%” as the correct answer. The documented failure mode is the opposite of what beginners fear: studies quoted in the manual find that most crash-involved riders underbrake the front tyre and overbrake the rear.
Should you leave a motorcycle in gear at a stop?
The two official sources disagree, which is worth knowing before somebody tells you off for either. The licensing manual says “remain in first gear while you are stopped so that you can move out quickly if you need to”, because a stationary motorcycle needs an escape route from behind. The Yamaha owner’s manual ends its deceleration procedure with the transmission shifted to neutral and the clutch lever released, which is easier on the hand and the clutch. Yamaha’s wording is permissive — the gearbox “can be shifted” into neutral — rather than an instruction, so the sensible compromise is first gear while traffic is still arriving behind you, neutral once the queue has stopped.
When should you change gear on a motorcycle?
It depends on the bike, and the sources genuinely do not agree on the unit. The licensing manual gives no numbers at all and says to shift up soon enough to avoid over-revving but not so soon that the engine lugs. A Yamaha MT-07 manual prints a table of recommended shift points in road speed — 20 km/h for first to second, then 30, 40, 50 and 60 — while the MT-09 manual from the same manufacturer has no table anywhere. So check your own book: if it has a speed table, use it, because a speedometer is far easier to read than an engine while you are still learning.
How do you do a U-turn on a motorcycle?
By reversing the body position you use everywhere else. The manual’s rule for normal turns is that “the rider and the motorcycle should lean together at the same angle”, but for slow, tight turns you “counterbalance by leaning the motorcycle only and keeping your body upright”. Add the other two ingredients — eyes up and around the turn rather than down at the front wheel, and a steady throttle held against a slipping clutch, working in the friction zone the manual tells you to be very familiar with — and the turning circle shrinks dramatically. Riders who cannot do it are almost always leaning with the bike, which is the correct technique at the wrong speed.
Does eye contact with a driver mean they have seen you?
No, and the licensing exam treats “make eye contact with the driver” as a wrong answer. Faced with a car waiting to enter an intersection ahead, the correct response in the sample knowledge test is to reduce speed and be ready to react. The manual’s own wording is about as direct as an official publication gets: “There are no guarantees that others see you. Never count on ‘eye contact.’ Too often, a driver looks right at a motorcyclist and still fails to ‘see’ him or her.” The working assumption it recommends is that if a car can enter your path, it will.
